I kind of disagree. They weren't only out there for a split second, so for people to be able to take the picture and capture the moment will be a great thing...and then they can put the camera away and pay attention, applaud, etc.

When I break out pictures for my grandma, it really helps jog her memory and helps her remember things that she though she'd forgotten. While these people are considered the "youth" now, they won't be forever. Their own personal picture could help them jog their memory so that they can recall that moment for their children/grand-children to hear about.

"You can always find photos online later," Where is your logic in that quote? If everyone stopped taking photos and payed attention then no you wouldn't be able to go online and find photos because no one would take any. They would be paying attention.

Oh yeah. This is so right. Same with the CNN Hyperdooper touch screen that used STILLS on television.

At least with film (of course I'm that old) we could throw the negs in box with the prints and someday pass them along as our inheritance.

I don't see what the problem is. Sure, we can have bad feelings about the future generations and their recording fetishes, but here we are, gawking at our computer screens, looking at people who were actually there (at least) capturing the moments to keep for themselves. I like to take pictures of all sorts of things in the city. Even though I may see it later on, I'll take a picture of it anyway. I take pictures during my trips wherever. I once recorded a rather stormy landing in JFK. It's become a nice little collection of pictures that I gathered, but I don't ever recall staring at everything through an LCD, since it was only for a few minutes or so throughout the entire experience.

How is it any different from all of those pictures of yesteryear crammed into some old photo album that your grandmother treasured, or that photo album of tours of duty taken by an uncle in the military? If you like what you see, I say capture it (if you can).

@Kaiser-Machead: Well speaking from experience, tourism or family and friend events are a different photo experience than attending a big event. I still take plenty of pictures and videos of stuff, but i won't bring cameras to concerts anymore.

At the touring/family/friend events, you snap an occassional pic or video as you see different things but tend to put the thing down pretty often. At a concert you do tend to spend most of it trying to hold the thing steady, waiting for the next change in lighting or position, trying to get good shots. It's worse if you're trying to get video - then your really do barely look up from the screen.

I had the same experience at the Louvre in Paris this summer -- I watched throngs of people walk up to breathtaking, one-of-a-kind works of art and only ever see them through the LCD screen of their camera. Not only do they not experience the painting, but although they have the photograph, they never actually SAW the work themselves. It doesn't bode well for this modern age.

Yea, I find it a bit excessive. If you noticed, people in the background of the Inauguration were taking pictures, including the first family.

I mean, I love photography, so often, I'll be doing the same thing, but I use a dSLR with a very long lens, and I know I'm going to get a quality shot. All of these people with their 2x zoom point and shoot cameras are going to have a ton of frames of a tiny blurry Barack.

@klaybc: You know, the whole "record" compulsion is not new. If you were to travel around the world, and see many beautiful sights, wouldn't it be nice if you had a cheap and convenient means to capture the imagery for those times when you're no longer taking frequent trips hitherto some exotic locale or grand ol' event of some sort? I'm part of that record-it-all generation, because while having it in memory is great, having a small memento is enjoyable, and great for conversation sometimes.

I don't think that the documentation of yesterday is over done at all it needs to be shoved in every ones faces around the world. It's the day the Promise of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were made hole and cleared from the stain of the ugly compromise which was necessary in order to found this country. I believe that the founders created the process of amendment with an eye on future generations that would fulfill the promise of freedom to all who reside in this country, that all men are created equal. That's what happened today, there is no place a man with dark skin has never been in this country. Even though there are other minorities in this country the relationship between whites and blacks of African descent is a particularly special one we of these two races are in essence married to each other, for better or worse. We have mixed out cultures producing a society distinguishable from our ancestors and so dynamic that it can not be called anything but American. This moment and this president is the personification of that marriage, and should be documented till the point of nausea.
