Best Buy and TiVo Tie the Knot, Insignia TVs to Get DVR Software

In marketing parlance, this is a strategic partnership by which TiVo, with the help of Best Buy store placement and aggressive advertising, will increase its market share, and Best Buy, through advertising placements in TiVo DVRs, will develop long-term relationships with its customers. In irritating child parlance, it's Best Buy and TiVo, sittin' in a Tree, M-A-R-K-E-T-I-N-G. Either works. More »

TiVo Gets Another Huge, Court-Ordered Gift From a EchoStar

Satellite provider EchoStar has been ordered to pay TiVo $103m for lifting some of their DVR software technology. (Again.) This is great news for TiVo, who hasn't been doing so well lately. Not so much, though, for EchoStar customers, who might end up losing DVR functionality in their set-top boxes for a while. [Reuters]

Use Your Cellphone To Control Your Box With TiVo Mobile Website

Adding to an ever expanding list of new features like pizza ordering and Netflix streaming, TiVo's now bringing you the option of SlingBox-esque control of your box on your cellphone. Their new mobile site, m.tivo.com, allows both subscribers and non-subscribers to browse television shows, schedule recordings to their TiVo box and possibly find new shows worth hitting the record button for. According to TiVo, the site is optimized for all cellphones and cellphone browsers, so anybody with internet connectivity can use it. All Giz Wants: The One True Internet Pizza Ordering App Framework

Today was a very special day in pizza tech news. First, Dominos, oh boy Dominos: you've automated pizza ordering and delivery in a way that I never specifically thought about, but now that it's out, have already welcomed as a new sign that humans are making progress in this world. You can now order, pay for and track delivery of a pizza from a graphical menu on your TiVo. And on top of that, a free medium Papa John's pie can be yours via its now-painfully-antiquated web delivery system all for becoming a fan of PJ's on Facebook. More »

    Netflix Streaming Finally on TiVo

Netflix has revealed the receiver of its next golden ticket of content distribution partnerships, and it's TiVo! The DVR company is the latest team member of Netflix's ever expanding movie download empire, and subscribers to TiVo's Series3, HD, and HD XL sets can now stream cinema directly to their TVs. And from this screenshot, its apparent that you can browse titles instead of having to queue them up on a PC first. This is much better than the Netflix-Tivo venture they put forth over a year ago and more like our wishes for a Tivo-Netflix marriage over a year ago. More »

    TiV-o'-lantern Scares the Commercials Away

The specific story varies, but as legend has it, the original Jack-o'-Lantern came about as a punishment after a crafty gent named Jack played a trick on the Devil. We don't know if TiVo was trapped after their similar stunt, giving man a way to skip past pesky commercials before advertisers sealed the company's soul in a pumpkin, but it sure makes for a spooky bedtime story. Die Halloween TiVo! Die!

The 10th installment of arieScope's annual Halloween short film just might be its best. TiVo is the star of the show this year, and the video does a good job of exposing its dark side. At first TiVo just wants to get to know you—learn your preferences to create a customized TV-watching experience. Careful though—TiVo is sensitive. Friendship turns to an obsession, obsession leads to jealousy, jealously leads to cat murder and cat murder leads to...well, you'll see. Bwahahahaha! [ariescope via Zats]

DVRPics iPhone App Beams Your Photos to TiVo

It's not going to change the world of iPhone apps or TiVo forever, but the $1 DVRPics app is a neat, cheap, little addition to the Apple App Store library nevertheless. The purpose is pretty straightforward: The app displays the photos on your iPhone or iPod touch on your TiVo. Features are bare bones for now, notes TiVo Blog, but the apps's developer, Chris Lundie, wants us to know that the ability to make slideshows in advance is coming. Also, Lundie notes that Apple's draconian practices do not allow direct access to the photo library. This is the reason why DVRPics can’t make all your photos available to the DVR at once, he said. A Sneak Peek at the New TiVo User Interface

Besides finally adding Picture-in-Guide so you can keep watching a show while chugging through the guide, the main menu is now lined with a row of pictures along the top. The thumbnails are a combo of recently watched, favorites and suggestions—as well as ads. More details, and videos of the new UI in action are below, courtesy of Dave Zatz. More »
