    I kept telling everyone that Johnny Mnemonic was ahead of its time and it's tech was going to come true. It predicted everything included in This Cyborg Life, except for the success of Ice-T's career, and cyborg tranny hookers, and why Takeshi Kitano was there, über brain-hacking dolphins, and... on second thought, what the fuck is that movie about?

    While relationships are sometimes difficult, I feel the loss of human interaction, passion and affection cant be replaced, even by the IStud. Sex isnt just about the most technically perfect orgasm (or 5) that you can have, but its about exploration, passion, caring, friendship, and whatever else the individual brings to the mix. IStud might be fun once, but for the long haul, serious hot passionate sex, give me a very real, flesh and blood, imperfect human. Anything we dont do technically perfect the first time, we can go back and get it right the second time. #sextoys

    @Curves: Exactly. And it's interesting to me how little attention we've paid the emotional/relational side of sexuality and relationships (granted, we also understand that side far less than we understand the physical side). Love your perspective, which I'd guess is shared by many here.

    @Software_Goddess: Agreed. The concept of being able to physically stimulate one another long distance is great. Being a wordsmith and storyteller, I appreciate what imagination and voice alone can accomplish for long distance couples, but the ability to add physical sensations is an amazing idea. Unfortunately, some silly concepts (and the unfortunate moniker of "teledildonics") have created a stigma that will mostly likely tarnish the acceptability and legitimacy for many, for a long time. As it it, sex toys for males carry a tremendous stigma, as opposed to female sex toys which have become quite generally acceptable, or even fashionable. #sextoys

    @met2art: Great points - it'll be interesting to chart the course of sex toy acceptance. After all, it wasn't that long ago (60s & 70s) when even widely respected sex therapists talked about the dangers of women becoming habituated to their vibrators or "replacing" men. And now our most recent data suggest that more than half (53%) of women and nearly half of men have used vibrators (most of men's use is with a partner though a good % have tried them alone, too). Also, that most women & men feel positively about women using vibrators. So we'll see how this distance-toy-play goes... #sextoys

In my opinion the gender disparity of toy acceptance stems from long-held biases of what a "man" should be: A virile, high-endurance machine who requires little to no assistance, least of all in getting a partner, or during sex. Any sort of mechanical assistance, whether it be a faux-vaginal sleeve, using a vibrator alone (or to assist a partner), penile extensions, etc, seem to run counter to that assertion that he is powerful and in control. Could it conversely be true that women see the use of toys as a liberating experience that frees them from dependence on others, and lets them "chart their own course" as it were? Or do they simply enjoy the experience without allowing cultural or gender bias ruin the moment? Personally I feel that men's use of toys is largely mocked for seeming to be a dimunition of male prowess. The overwhelming commentary in regard to Fleshlights seems to be one of "why not just go out and get a girl?" as though, for everyone, it were that simple.

    These levels of disparity in sexual openness and acceptance between men and women are fascinating to me. Women's bisexuality and toy use has become much more widely accepted (if not praised and sought after), yet in men those same issues are still largely viewed as bizarre, awkward, or disturbing. In this regard women seem to have become the forerunners for open acceptance of different sexual lifestyles and the acceptance thereof. Male pride and ego seem to be the deciding factor here. My apologies for the wall of text. Fascinating subject... I could go on, and on, but I'll stop here! :) Thanks again for an insightful article. #sextoys

    @met2art: You're welcome - I enjoyed writing in. And yes, I agree that gender expectations and stereotypes play significant roles in how we've viewed men's and women's toys. I think earlier on, that's also why women's use of toys was looked down on - because of ideas that men should always be ready & able to satisfy a woman (and that women shouldn't be masturbating). Now that we're (mostly) past those ideas as a sexuality and have liberated at least some aspects of women's sexuality, we need to do a better job of embracing the diverse ways that men experience their sexuality. One thing I loved about the movie "I Love You, Man" was the range of different men (& ideas of masculinity) in that movie. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! #sextoys

    @met2art: personally, I think it's important to ignore ranking, starring, modding, rep, etc on boards. What are we, a bunch of asskissers? I'd rather say what I want and be dugg down (to cite the most obtuse modding- ever) than to forever try to find the right thing to say to make the hall monitors praise me. Don't sweat it, kid- there's a bigger world out there.

    edit: (this is all fabulously ironic, I know, since Mike was indeed kissing ass).

    In any case, the author completely misused "pun intended." I just wanted to point that out. Besides there being no pun in 'Ride On', if there were, and it was good, it would be obviously intended.

    @robogobo: The whole star system is a load of BS. It's supposed to make Giz easier to read but it doesn't work. Instead if you don't turn on all comments -which everyone should do, not that this would ever get modded up enough that the people who it is addressed to hear it - then you get to see the same old people trying the same old jokes again.

    Some of them are funny. But their comments would get modded up in a normal mod system anyway.

    Star system = FAIL

    It's really amazing, actually. I used to read Engadget but then their comment system was so hopelessly broken that I switched to Giz. It was good for a while, then the introduced the star system. #sextoys

    Even if it is slightly different, and even if the developer thought of it on their own, I'd still like to take credit for having inspired ARGH when I wrote "I want to see an augmented reality application based on 'They Live.'" back in July.
