I thought it was common knowledge that AT&T's version of 3G is faster than Verizon's version of 3G. The real question is reliability and coverage. Bars don't mean shit.

    Man these comments are retarded!

"Gizmo your study sucks, sure it shows att is good in the area's tested but that doesn't mean it's good in other areas"

"Service sucks in my area so it must suck for everyone else!"

Sorry guys (the people commenting) you can't have it both ways. This study isn't representative of everyone's experience nor is your experience representative of everyone else s experience.

I can't say much for Tampa myself, but the majority of the surrounding areas work great on AT&T with my iPhone. I'm always the one in the back thinking "What are they talking about? Mine works fine."
There's a few homes that it doesn't work so great in, but take half a step out the door and it works again. Lead paint anyone?

I remember waking up one morning and my computer screen looking like that first pic. I took out my video card and a few of the resistors had cracked open. It will be a while before 1080p will be a standard on netbooks, if netbooks do last that long...

I'm in Lansing, MI and was scared to switch to AT&T from Verizon, but six months ago I did, and couldn't be happier. I've never had a dropped call, not once, at average 1300 minutes per month. I've never had the data network fail, either, as far as I know.

"3G mega test" is a misnomer if you only test downloads. This article needs to be renamed "3G very partial test".

For some reason, I thought that Verizon's downspeeds maxed out at 1.4 mbps and that was because this was a limitation of EVDO.

Can somebody tell me why I'm wrong?

@ducttape38: Depends on what revision. In theory Revision 0 can max out at 2.4mbps, while Revision A tops out at 3.1, and the lesser used Revision B can top out at 9.3

It would be nice if there was info about the time and day(s) these tests were performed; about 3 weeks ago or so, I saw my speed on T-Mobile jump in Portland.

I can see how the tests could be compromised if the protocols weren't exactly the same.

@IN THE FACE!: Actually the contrary - The complaints have been particularly centered around the largest metro areas with the densest population of high-rises that block AT&T's 3G signals. Like NYC, particularly Manhattan. There's physics behind it, not marketing.

I live outside Buffalo, NY. Suburban area. Second most depressed economy only to Detroit nationwide, and with a declining population as you'd expect. No carrier would have any business case for expansion here.
And we have literally 1 skyscraper, in the city metro.

AT&T coverage is flawless here. So is Verizon. I think you'd be challenged to find a dead area.

The challenges ARE the metro areas, mostly for the poor penetration (and resulting dead 'shadows') of signal through mazes of tall, large buildings.

Hence why they picked those locations for testing.

I spend most of my time in L.A. and the surrounding areas and I've never had any problems with AT&T. I regularly get about 1.5 to 1.6Mbps download and 500Kbps upload speeds around here.

I love how "Coast to Coast" means "We completely ignore the midwest".

Nevermind that Dallas/Ft. Worth is the 5th largest Metropolitan area in the United States... Yeah, they don't need coverage at all.

(And for the record, AT&T blows down here.)

@Gundem: Houston is some 60 miles inland but its still connected to water, it also processes most of the oil and gasoline you use unless you live very close to NJ, in which case Houston only supplies a large chunk of it. Your fancy pants Dell was made in Austin, you know where SXSW is? yeah the indie music Mecca? thats the one. Dallas.. well aside from the Toadies nothing good ever came from Dallas, but i only say that because i'm from San Antonio and i think the Dallas accent makes us all look stupid.
