The format, which was to include Blu-ray on one side and HD DVD on the other, had already been delayed once from end-of-year 2007 to sometime in 2008. It seems that Warner, the poppa of the format, was unable to get any other studios on board, which would make the format's success improbable. Oh well, I suppose we'll have to be happy with dual-format players rather than discs. [Tech Digest]

<![CDATA[Warners delay launch of Total HD Until 2008]]> Warner's Total HD discs, expected at the end of this year, will not now be making an appearance until 2008. The announcement, made yesterday by the entertainments giant, gave no reason why tills will not be jingling with Total HD sales this holiday season, leaving room for speculation.

It could be that there are problems getting the dual format onto on one disc, or that they are waiting to see who comes out on top in the Blu-ray-HD bitch fight. Either way, the company is keeping schtum about its reasons. "There is no expiration date on the viability of this concept, so we're not in a rush to do it," said Warner's senior VP in charge of marketing management. "We'll do it when it makes sense and when it's right."

<![CDATA[Total HD Discs Coming in June, Format War Continues]]> Remember those Total HD discs we talked about back in January? In a nutshell, they were Warner's solution to the format war, super discs that offered Blu-ray on one side and HD DVD on the other. Well, the discs are ready for their 15 minutes of fame debuting this June for "a little more" than the cost of current single-format discs. But there's a small problem...

You see, the first gen discs will have 15GB HD DVD on one side and 25GB Blu-ray on the other. Come August we'll see higher-capacity Total HD discs with 30GB HD DVD/25GB Blu-ray. So what's the problem? 50GB Blu-ray is outta the picture. (At least in the short term). So Blu-ray fans are bound to feel a little burned over that.

No other studios (other than Warner) are backing Total HD right now, so it'll be interesting to see how they do. Technically, Total HD isn't a third format, but to me this just gives me more reason to stick with my DVDs.

<![CDATA[Total HD Disc Format From Warner Bros. Combines Blu-ray, HD DVD Into One Disc]]> bluraytotalhd.jpgTime Warner's Warner Bros. plans to announce a high definition disc at CES that combines both the Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. In other words, the disc—called Total HD—will come with both Blu-ray and HD DVD formated content on it. A little confusing? You bet. And given that companies like LG are starting to announce players that can play both rival high def formats, one might question the necessity of introducing yet another disc format, even if it's supposed to be a uniter and not a divider. Right now, the Total HD disc won't have standard def content on it, but Time Warner has filed patents indicating that it could do so at a later date.

Let's see, another high def format disc to confuse consumers with. Sounds like a good idea.
