You know, color me silly but after the huge success of the iPhone, you'd think that companies would be scrambling to release a truly worthy iPhone competitor. For a company that produces 2 versions of the same phone (not including color choice), they really seem to have dominated the cell phone market.
I appreciate the G1, but it is still not quite the same level of user experience.
And, the Storm sucks. I decided to stop and play w/ one. It really does have a hideous touch screen interface.
People keep talking about the Pre, but it isn't even out yet so we have no real clue about whether or not it will suck. And here we are 2 years later with Apple of all people dominating the cell phone market mindshare, and making money while doing it.
I passed through the T-Mobile store, and it's sort of depressing these lame choices we have for smartphones. It's mostly Blackberries for Nokia's sake.
And here's another thing, I've been toying around an iTouch for the last 1.5 month, and although fun, THAT browser has crashed more often than Pocket IE.
After my time with Windows Mobile, and utterly hating it at the end, I've decided that it's actually a very noble effort to bring as much functionality to a mobile device as you can while running on countless choices of hardware. Unfortunately, whoever was supposed to be in charge of bringing this together into something that is wholly cohesive and user friendly for everyday use, was probably out taking a whiz for the passed few years.
On the other end, the iPhone brings exactly that, something that is cohesive and friendly overall. It's just that it takes a bit of the opposite approach of Windows Mobile. It brings far fewer functions that require software as supplements, and still lacks some basic functionality. However, I think a very good middle ground can be reached, but I don't think Windows Mobile is there yet. I have more faith in Android at this point, because Microsoft's slow-going effort to improve their interface has sapped whatever faith I had left.
Stupid idiot fanboi that wrote this article... I don't have an iPhone, but I do have a Touch and Safari does crash and I've never had Opera crash yet. My Windows Mobile phone work wonderfully for tethering without letting the network know i'm doing it.
I'm also VERY SORRY that you can't seem to figure out how to use all of Window's Mobile features. I guess you need technology spoon fed like a cry baby. Atleast I can record video, tether, copy and paste, receive MMS, and turn off data (Andriod, uhumm). In addition I can make my phone my own, and not be an idiot drone in the borg collection. I doubt anybody else's phone looks just like mine...
I mean how credible are your results when your blantly blinded and hate all things Windows Mobile.
@LJKelley: What, do you have some sort of vested interest in Windows Mobile? People's strong dislike isn't exactly ill-founded. People are not complaining about the functions it doesn't have built in, or things like that, just that it's a goddamn poorly designed hodgepodge of quasi-desktop interface pixelbukkakeshit. Thankfully, the likes of HTC and Sony Ericsson have been able to gloss over much of its interface, but it's still in there somewhere.
How did u get the non-web gizmodo to load? I'm always redirected to m.gizmodo.com. Also with a few registry tweaks or a cooked, HSDPA can be enabled on the fuze which dramatically increases speed.
Go to the Kaiser Forum (Kaiser = TyTn II = Tilt) and look for the "NATF v5 AT&T Manilla Loaded" ROM, it will blow away any factory loaded ROM you have ever used.
@bpapa9013: I assume this has gotten better. I got the tilt about when it came out and loved the tweakability and feature set. Unfortunately, after loading a custom ROM and making my tweaks the phone was horribly unstable. Freezing constantly, not accepting calls, etc. I ended up returning mine after 30 days. Huge letdown for me... I wanted that phone to work so badly. My guess is that it was unstable due to me unlocking things like GPS camera, HSDPA, etc, but without those tweaks I didn't want the phone anyway.
@bucho54: There are plenty of crappy ROMs that are built by novice "Cooks" on that site.
Look for one that has a high post count (like 100 pages of comments or more). Also make sure that the thread looks like the cook is updating the info posts on the first page (they will also often update the thread title with the date of the last update).
Most cooks will also offer several versions of their ROM, usually like basic/light/loaded packages. If you are going for max stability/speed go for the basic/light, if you want max functionality get the loaded. But be sure to look at the actual list of included programs on the loaded versions as well, they may include a bunch of software you don't want/need, so if that's the case get the basic/lite version.
I would recommend the NATF v5 ROMs, I'm currently using the NATF v5 HTC Manilla Loaded, and while it isn't the fastest ROM I have ever used, it has a good balance of stability and features. It's basically a strip/re-pack of the latest tilt optimized WM6.1 ROMs from HTC/AT&T, all the carrier crap and useless software is removed, a useful set of registry tweaks are applied and some software that most people want is added. And since it was originally a Tilt ROM you don't have to worry about any driver issues/flakyness (Most ROMs that suck i.e. slow, unstable, etc. were developed for other handsets but the cooks re-pack the ROM with the Tilt drivers from an earlier ROM), it is incredibly difficult to do that sort of mix-match cooking effectively, I think there are only a handful of cooks on xda that could actually pull off a reliable hybrid ROM (dutty[retired] was the cook of the only hybrid ROM I ever used that was actually stable and reasonably fast).
"...it's like comparing one of those 100-in-1 kitchen gadgets that'll blend, slice, dice, toast, saute, braise, set the table, clean the dishes AND suck you off while it's doing all that to a Waring MX1000 blender. It doesn't matter how much the all-in-one gadget can technically do if you can't figure out how to use it, and it performs every task with only mediocre results."
There are no mediocre suck offs, just like there are no bad BJs.
"Accuracy" of page rendering is more a function of web design rather than browser experience. Even assuming that the arbitrarty using of Firefox 3 as a reference was a good idea, all this tells me is that those sites may not be well coded for mobile users. Big deal. Dreamweaver CS4 lets you emulate various mobile phones so you can see how your webpage looks on a variety of platforms...Giz, I'm looking at you.
@Paul: The whole point is that the sites shouldn't need to be coded for mobile users. The browsers should be able to operate as a desktop browser would operate.
@erichg14: On a (best case scenario) VGA screen? Good luck. There are plenty of considerations that can be taken into account in the code to improve the display of web pages on smaller screens that won't affect their display on larger screens at all.
Until we start seeing phones with screen resolutions of 600x800 or larger, "the real internet" is just a meaningless marketing buzz word.
I love it. Totally agree. I stopped buying WinMo phone when at one point in my life I woke up and found out the phone crashed in the middle of the night (I hit the on button and phone reset itself) and the alarm of the phone did not go off. I missed an important meeting that I happened to be the one responsible for it.
I realized if they can't do alarm clock right, this thing doesn't deserve to be on the market.
@logicalnoise: Oh....Are we talking about the so-called "browser" that essentially showing you a giant image? Lmao....Good luck on text entry with that. *Thumbs up*.
@TheSonOfKrypton: I honestly don't know why all the reviewers trash WinMo all the time. I've used Safari/iPhone on several occasions (for extended web browsing sessions). And I would honestly rather have WM6.1 and Opera 9.5 any day of the week.
But I also run a custom HTC branded WM6.1 build (NATF v5 HTC Manilla Loaded) on my tilt (that I use with T-Mob edge service). Could a quality custom ROM really make that much difference? I honestly don't know, it has been 3 years since I used a carrier/manufacturer supplied ROM...
Additionally, I can barely tell the difference (page load times) between Edge/Tilt and 3G/iPhone (Admittedly I don't even have 3G coverage from any provider in the small metro area I live in, but I was using the iPhone in a larger nearby metro area that does have AT&T 3G, which is the experience I am basing my comparison on).
yes, a custom rom really does make that much of a difference. i know when i had my Tmobile MDA i created my own custom rom w/only things i wanted and the hacks i needed and it was twice as fast as the original Tmobile rom.
@seamonkey420: Hmm the reviewed forgot to mention that Opera can download files, copy and paste data, send links as MMS, SMS or email, save pictures, dynamic text resize, save the page, text in page search. But none of that matters because its not Apple.
The numbers on your chart make no sense whatsoever. You have the Samsung Epix opening National Geographic in IE in 41.3 seconds and call that a fail and then in Opera it took 1 minute and 40 seconds and called that good? What the hell?
