@future-proof: Webcams broadcasting over the internet aren't gadgets or gizmos? And what if the fire in your example was from an exploding laptop/iPod?
@Powered by cookies and beer: Ya get pretty cold up north. Last week was down around 0 most nights. And it doesn't have to be freezing cold to kill you
This is why I completely support beating your children. And no, I don't mean being abusive in any way, but just that kids need a good old fashioned beat down like in the good ol' days.
Too much do you see parents these days taking away consoles, or taking away computer time, or phone or car privilege's when in trouble. If I did something I wasn't supposed to do I got slapped around and I never did anything this stupid. When I wanted a Nintendo or SNES I had to pay for that shit myself. And because I did, my parents didn't have the right to take it away from me. Although, because I was responsible enough in the first place to save up money and purchase it myself I was also smart enough not be a fiend with it. That took years of experience to become addicted. By that point, it was too late for my parents to try and stop me.
The kid acted like a complete ass by running away because his 360 was taken from him. He brought it upon himself really. It's sad, but I don't feel any remorse for the kid.

Isn't this supposed to be a gadget blog instead of "there's a small fire in my trashcan" attention grabber site?

This wasnt about a video game; something deeper was happening here. A tragedy for everyone, especially those left behind.

I ran away from home once when I was a kid. I can't even remember why I did but I'm sure it was something completely stupid.
Luckily things turned out better for me although I did get my ass handed to me by my dad as a result of it.
