That and possibly also the fact that when you drop frozen or thawed bloodworms in, a cloud of what appears to be blood starts to form around them. I used to have a caecilian worm that loved those things, but I learned the first time that I needed to wait for the cube to thaw before dropping it in the tank. That crazy not-so-little guy (~20" long at the point that I switched to bloodworms) started gnawing away at the still-frozen cube, and I couldn't imagine that it was really good for him to be doing that.

We found dried-up caecilian worms around the house for a couple weeks. Why would anyone WANT these things as pets?

They're commonly known as black rubber eels (though they're amphibians, and not fish, which is why it's no longer legal to import them). And the reason people like me want them as pets is that they're amusingly stupid and cute as a button in a really weird way. Unfortunately, that first part poses issues if there's any way they can possibly get out of the tank. My 20"er escaped on three different occassions, and the third time I didn't notice it was out for at least a day or two (they like to burrow into the substrate, so the first clue I had that it wasn't in the tank was when it didn't come out to feed, and since I had clipped every loose corner of the lid down and filled in every gap I foolishly thought that it wouldn't be able to muscle it's way out through the first hole it could find).

It's looks like an alien life form (we know it's not...).

Honestly though, you could go down a mile in the ocean and pick out basically anything and be terrified for life. Go look up the bigfin squid sometime. And then never sleep again.

What's wrong with the bigfin squid? Looks pretty squidlike to me. You want to see some crazy undersea lifeforms, go watch James Cameron's Aliens of the Deep, where they actually captured footage of a couple never-before-seen lifeforms. My favorite was one that looked like a ribbon that formed a circle, with a bulbous growth at one point on the ribbon. The idea of a creature that you can literally swim through (without actually being inside of) is just too crazy for words.
