why you gotta be startin' shit with the gadget-lovin' Eastbound and Down fans?! I admit to worrying that after The Foot Fist Way, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express and now this, Danny McBride seems to have only one character. But it's still a funny character and the show is a nice comedy yin to FOTC's yang.

@Guy_Whitey_Corngood: Well, I am a fan of Danny McBride in Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express and—you forgot one—Hot Rod (arguably his finest work). But yeah, that one character just can't hold my sympathies for much longer, douche that he is. He's a much better sidekick. I started watching Foot Fist Way and hit the stop button. Stupid stuff.

Sounds good to me. Even better when I can just connect my HTPC (DVR) to the internets and not the cables.

Ah, but interoperability and adoption by other providers is gonna be a while off.

Ah, but then only my cable modem need connect to my cables.. and I don't have to spend my day fighting internally whether to get the clear-QAM tuners, stick with the analog capture card + cable boxes and IR transmitters, or the component H.264 boxes that aren't compatible with MCE.

So... what this means is basically you would be able to stream tv on your computer and phone?

I just want to make the distinction here that they don't mean that you'd be able to access all their content on your computer at any given time (a la sidereel or torrent)

@robot-shmobot: Excellent question! I don't mind watching a few short commercials on Hulu (or something similar) because I'm not opening up my wallet to watch the shows. But, if I'm a paying for the online service, then I'd better have extremely few/no commercials, great video quality and an easy-to-use interface.

Granted, TV subscribers pay and they still have a ton of commercials, so I have a sinking feeling that we're dreaming here.

Agreed. I think the gist is that we'd get exactly the same crap we get on our cable TV pipe, but on computers and phones as well.

@robot-shmobot: My parents once told me that way back in the day, Cable TV, being a pay service, meant exactly that: No Commercials. Of course, this was WAY back in the past... like the late 70's, I think... Eventually the Cable companies decided "Hey... I bet we can get these suckers to Pay us... to show them commercials! YAY, Capitalism!" I mean... it's not like you HAD to have cable. There was still "free" ad-supported TV.

@DeusExMach: I am not certain all cable TV channels were ever "commercial free" since, as I recall, they always had the major networks. That said, CNN and the rest used to be sans commercials until they (Ted Turner, I believe) realized that you could add commercials and still collect a fee from the cable operators. It was not really the cable companies that pulled that (after all, they are just the "pipe", right?), but the content creators (channels) that realized there was nothing stopping them from adding commercials and having two sources of revenue.
