This should be under "Things we say we regret and dont really regret". That was one of the most commented on and visited posts ever at Giz, AND one of the funniest, regardless of what some folks said.
Why use that....I have a mini-universal remote that's the size of a keychain. It syncs to like every TV I've ever seen, and I can turn them on and off, volume, channels, and input. It's dead nifty, and great for school pranks. We did that back in December last year. Before Giz did it at CES. It was our Christmas present, me and some friends found it floating around the interweb, free for surveys, did them and got them free of charge.
"patent laws as responsible for stifling "the creativity"
Precisely. Patents should be limited to no more than 5 years. The present system where they can be grandfathered for generations is ludicrous. Now they want to patent forms of life. Thankfully patents were not around when somebody thought of the wheel.
Um.. Apart from the patent protection, which perhaps he is now waiving, what's the point of the open source? Isn't this just obviously a string of "OFF" codes from the most popular manufacturers, sent out sequentially? If you want an open-source IR transmitter I'm sure something is out there.

But, being the shameless cad I am, I might just walk up to the TV and turn it off. Analog nuisance FTW...or FTL.
