@Mike Camilleri: Generally no, which is why Apple has been resistant to the whole thing. People will see "Smilies!" and expect them to just work. The reality is that they'll only show up for people with Emoji enable of their phones too, i.e. folks with Japanese handsets or similar hacks. It's confusing for end-users, I guess.
