Can someone explain the SKYPE phenomenon? It's been out there for a couple years now. And before that - we had AOL instant messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ, and a few others - all do Audio and Video. Yahoo offered phone calls for awhile via Net2Phone.
Skype is nothing new. They're just better at getting their name out there, and I believe - better at the product because that's ALL they do.
@JeffPom: I don't use the Skype videoconferencing anymore, but Skype is great to use as a long-distance calling solution. I use that function daily. Since I have an account, I can make calls from my iPod touch as well, if I'm in a hot spot (and have the mic). None of those things can replace Skype.
Came someone seriously explain the whole Oprah phenomenon?
I truly don't get it. All I know is that one time she gave free cars to her audience and free chicken to everyone, although the free chicken was not really delivered because of bad communication with individual KFC chains and headquarters.
What is so great about this sometimes fat, sometimes skinny black woman?
And with more dead pirates you get the less people you get willing to do it. Up to today there has been little risk and lots of reward. Need to kill lots more.
@rjflyn: Much easier said than done. You can't kill them easily when they use hostages as human shields, and you can't sort the pirates from the innocents if you attack their hometowns.
It's a well known fact that the recent sharp rise in global temperatures was kicked off after the infant USA went into Tripoli and kicked the crap out of the pirates of the Mediterranean.
That we're seeing more pirates is surely a sign that the Earth is trying to heal itself by restoring the balance of pirates to commercial vessels. Let's not interfere with this most natural and beneficial process.
Personally, I rather enjoy that Gizmodo goes off on these non-gadget tangents and brings us some news from the non-consumer end. It's part of what makes Gizmodo enjoyable to look at, and can bring in a wider variety of readership. Since this article is not some dominating presence in the main page, I don't see the issue.
I wish people would quit with these sorts of critical comments. At least try to defend your position with something more cogent than a snide remark.
Not a firefight at all, just some poor Somalis getting dominated. Sad thing is nobody will regret their deaths, including their own families, or even their pirate bosses.
