ok, so the similarities are rather astonishing, but I think that the worst part is that the blackberry commercial is very nearly twice as long (1.76x actually), and yet there is less point in the end. so, because blackberry loves U2 I should get one of their phones? The apple ad is specifically for the ability to download the brand new hit Viva la Vida before the cd is out. it is a benefit for apple and itunes, and it also is made using a program that apple is touting. the blackberry commercial uses much more time and money for... what? oh, and did i mention the apple ad looks much better? I was dying for this to be the new Viva la Vida music video and was sorely disappointed. I'd really like to find a way to get an HD version of this ad. seriously. I'd pay money for this. is that sad?

@wetworker: Actually, I think Moyo's the opportunist here, since she's the one who constantly invokes the Bono comparison, but she deserves a pass because I think she's a serious person with a serious argument.

I half agree with her. Obviously, aid to Africa is not a sustainable model for development. What they really need is for countries to relax their trade restrictions so that they may actually export goods and services and, you know, make money. And what do you know? Bono's ONE campaign advoates for just that.

But trade restrictions are the result of nationalist sentiments in politics, and they're not going to change overnight (and they're certainly not Bono's fault). So given that, aid is the second best option. I think Moyo needs to pay more than just lip service to the positive effects of aid in the past: especially in public health, there are literally millions of children and families who are healthier because of the work of Bono and countless others. And from her perspective, the work Bono did with debt forgiveness ought to be an even bigger deal, because the kind of sustainable economic development she envisions would have been impossible if otherwise well-run African governments were burdened by the debts of their profligate and corrupt forerunners.

U2! Equal opportunity ass kissers! You give them enough money, they promote your product, and starving kids in Africa get 15 minutes of fame with Bono squeezed tight against their faces feigning smiles with a camera shoved in their faces. Everybody wins!

Really? It's more than different enough. As an art student, I felt like, sure it reminded me of the Apple Ad, but at the same time the only similarity lies in the colors and specs of light.

If you go to, say, 0:37 in the first and 0:19 in the second and pause the videos- it's more-than-apparent that the visual styles are different.

And, at any rate, it's not nearly as bad as, say the Apple-meets-Such Great Heights vid in which Apple uses the same styling, costume sets, and shots. If that was allowed, then this most certainly isn't offensive.

I guess when you become a massive brand like U2, you can endorse anything. They sold the U2 iPod for a long time, too.

That's indeed confusing that U2 would be down with doing a Blackberry ad after their whole deal with Apple just a few years ago.

I still have my iPod 5th gen box with U2 on it. I can send it to Bono if you want, you know, remind him where his loyalties lie.

@SysRq: I don't think it's that confusing. Bono/U2 also did a promo deal with Dell on their Product (RED) computer line.
