The reason? She wants to do all sorts of media stuff that her old K7 based HP Pavilion tank can't handle and I spend most of my time in a terminal or a browser.

I ordered a Mini 9 with Ubuntu and tinkered around with it while I waited for my upgrade parts to arrive, on which I was going to install Windows.
I hated it. I get that it's customizeable and virus free and that "real" computer users love it, but I understand why after trying to use it. It's not user friendly at all, and I would have to spend a lot of time reading HOW to do something before actually doing it. I'm just not a command-line type of guy.
I mean it doesn't use Flash. Any idea how much of my internet browsing consists of using Flash? I love YouTube and blogs often link to videos that I was unable to watch. That alone is enough to glady leave Ubuntu and Linux behind.
It was a slick interface, but it seems you need to know a decent chunk about programming to get the most out of it. I prefer to be lazy and use the years of knowledge I've already racked up with Windows. With that said, I commend those patient/smart enough to get some great use out of it.

Ubuntu really isn't as difficult as you are making it out to be. It's different, to be sure, but the learning curve isn't all that high. Still, if you'd rather stick with Windows, more power to you.

Still looks like 1995.
