The Unit: A Kitchen, Table, Fridge, and Bathtub All-in-One

When it comes to furniture design, finding a way to simultaneously maximize functionality and minimize size is all the rage these days. The "Unit" concept from Philippe Malouin falls neatly into that category with a design that combines a kitchen, table, refrigerator and a bathtub all-in-one. Not much information exists about the Unit, but it appears that the fridge would be located in the cabinet on the left while the bathtub doubles as a sink. More »

iRiver's Multimedia Unit2 has Everything We Could Want, Including Apple-esque UI

We know that iRiver has been working on its all-singing, all-dancing multimedia player-dock-thingie the Unit2 for over a year. The Apple-esque interface, its voice over IP internet telephone (yes, a telephone) and the removable 16:9 touchscreen make it look quite amazing. And expensive. We don't know the price yet, though. Seeing the unit and the telephone in action, which unfolds to show a full QWERTY keyboard, makes it even more attractive. More »

Corner Aiming System Looks Like Terminator's Deadly Eye, Probably Has Same Effect

Peek into the Eye of Death, because the Concealed Engagement Unit by Swedish company Aimpoint looks taken straight out the skull of a Terminator T-800. This periscope aiming system is completely different from the CornerShot and a lot simpler. It can be used with any weapon, and according to Danger Room's Aaron Rowe, who was able to try it at the 2008 Shooting humans, Hunting John Connor, and Outdoor Trade Show in Las Vegas, "it rocks at close range." Too bad ducks never hang around at close range now. Oh, wait. Nevermind. [Aimpoint via Danger Room]

Super Green Ecobutton Puts PCs into Extra Deep Sleep

Give the USB plug-in Ecobutton a thump when you pop off to lunch or a meeting, and it puts your computer into an electricity-saving deep sleep. While snoozing in "ecomode," the Windows PC will draw less power than if you just left it in sleep or screensaver, which can be nothing but good for your electricity bills and the environment, right? Toyota i-Real Concept "Car"

We were pretty excited about this Toyota concept "car" called the i-Real, Toyota's successor to the way too sci-fi to be real i-Unit. Just hear the pitch: it's a car the wraps around your body, allowing you to zip through life with little encumbrance from mortal legs. Meanwhile, when going at high speeds, it will leave an upright position and allow you to lean back, increasing stability and cutting back on the face-first into the wall factor. It seemed like the better Segway because of its ability to cut the bullshit and haul ass as necessary. But alas, the i-Real only goes 18.6 mph, making it little more than the coolest wheelchair on the block. Hit up jalopnik for a full photo gallery. [jalopnik and uberreview]

Toyota Releases $300 iPod Integration Kit For All Current-Model Cars

It's fantastic news for Toyota and Lexus owners, as the car company has just released an iPod adapter kit to directly link the player with your car's audio system. The kit fits into all current Toyotas and Lexuses and connects inside the glove box so you can control the iPod with your head unit (or steering wheel controls). The whole thing costs $300 (more than most iPods), and finally brings Toyota in line with GM, Ford, BMW, Mercedes and Audi in offering iPod integration. Toyota: happily being #1 by letting everyone else innovate beforehand. [Gizmag - Additional car expertise by Ray] More »

New DirecTV DVRs Can Mess Up Plasma TVs, But Not LCDs

According to Gary over at HD Guru, the newest DVR receivers from DirecTV, the H20 and HR20 models, border nearly every standard def 4:3 channel with vertical black bars. The black may be a nice touch visually, but if you leave one of those channels on your plasma TV too long, those bars will glow strangely bright when the whole screen is in use. LCD TV owners, of course, need not fret. More »

Air Disinfection Unit to Make Hospitals Cleaner, Safer

Hospitals and germ freaks rejoice! English tech company Inov8 (sounds a bit ravey, doesn't it?) has come up with the Air Disinfection unit, or AD. It re-creates fresh air, which is a key factor in killing microbes, without the need for opening a window in the operating theater. Any surgeons or hospital staff reading, that was a joke, by the way. More »
