So Sony makes a platform built around single person games, hire companies to make shooters under the assumption that we have no friends, then link us all up by facebook?
@Thee Sea: The problem with a firmware update is that it has the potential to brick any device.
I once killed my DVD burner by leaving a disc in the drive when I flashed it.
There is no 100% flawless transition. Besides, I think Sony said the problem was from people having a 3rd party HDD in their PS3 that wasn't fully compatible.
@Thee Sea: You can't expect Sony or any manufacturer to be able to predict every hardware configuration.
The reason we don't hear anything like this for the 360 is because the hardware is locked down to MS proprietary hardware. (HDDs anyone)
I'm a firm believer that human error accounts for the majority of all problems. It's also possible that the system was screwed before and people are trying to use the firmware update as an excuse to get Sony to pay the bill.
Moral of the story kiddies, leave your system stock and follow ALL directions to reduce the risk, otherwise, accept the consequences.
@00000000: The PS3 is not a computer. It is a piece of hardware that is, for all intents and purposes, nearly completely locked. Like it or not, most people using the PS3 are NOT replacing the harddrive or anything of the sort and the brick reports are coming from stock systems.
So YES, I CAN expect some to predict hardware configurations.
@Thee Sea: Still don't see eye to eye with your logic there. Everything that can/will recieve a firmware update has a chance of breaking, stock or not. S'a pretty simple concept, really.
The reason behind using the computer quip was that compys are (probably) the most common devices that you would incur any upgrading of the os/firmware. #tips
Don't get me wrong, I suppose last night, when this article appeared, I could have clicked a couple of source links to figure out that this was just a preview. Or maybe it might have been a good option to note in the article that this is just a preview.
On a lighter note - GO GET YOUR BATTLEFIELD BETA KEYS!!! Maybe I am stupid enough to think that this update was live at the time of this article, but my stupidity led me to finding that they're beta keys to be had for PS3 users exclusively. Go to ign.com and register, go to your account home page and find the link. OR just click [www.fileplanet.com]#facebookps3
Radio and TV don't give you a platform to bore others with your dribble. "Woo, look at me! Look at how much of a douche I am!" That's what Facbook and other "social networking" sites are about. The sad part about all this is that people don't even realize that they're being douche bags. They believe that talking about themselves and thinking that they're "special" is not disgustingly self absorbed. #facebookps3
@OUberLord: Perhaps a little. But it's the only way to describe what theese social networking sites are about. In addition, this is a tech blog, not a web site dedicated to me or other people. The comment section is for just that. To express your opinions.
@Noobs-R-Us: "Radio and TV don't give you a platform to bore others with your dribble. "
Really???. You know what, I'm not even going to get into how utterly ironic that statement is... moving on.
You may have some bug up your ass for Facebook and other sites because you focus on how one particular group of people use it. Don't blame the medium because some don't use it to it's best potential. #facebookps3
@karelj: "Radio and TV don't give you a platform to bore others with your dribble. "
When I wrote "you" I meant every Tom Dick and Harry in the world. Radio and TV limit who gets to dribble, whereas, no such filter exists on Facebook. Pretty much every idiot and their dog gets to talk about their utterly worthless lives. Can you imagine if anyone who wanted to get on TV or the radio gets to? How utter digusting it would become? Not that some of it isn't already with those reality shows. #facebookps3
@Noobs-R-Us: Like @00000000 and @Sparts said - you need better friends to follow. You are still blaming the platform for the behavior of some.
I understand that you despise the behavior exhibited by certain people, but you are completely ignoring the many positive things that Facebook can accomplish. #facebookps3
Well, seeing as it costs nothing, I'll DL the stuff tonight. I hope that I can stream my ZunePass content from a Vista-powered puter to my XBox. #xbox360update
No matter what social site it is, the moment I see dubious ads for medications of suspicious origins, or games by Zynga, that's my sign to exit. Any site that would host those criminals would gladly sell your personal information to spammers as well.
I hope that's not the only thing it fixes - iPhone 3.1 also disabled iPod controls when you double tapped the home button (except in certain instances). Let's find out.
@Tamar Weinberg: You can use the Settings to adjust what happens when you double tap the Home button. Perhaps your preferences were changed to something else?
@EBone: no, it's worse than that. It only gives you the quick iPod controls if it considers the music application to be open. This (largely) is only if music is already playing, or if the application was the last thing open before sleep set in.
It's particularly annoying if you like to listen to music while using apps that pause whatevers playing on startup.
@Tamar Weinberg: From what I herd from a friend (Have not tried it yet.) You can tap the center button on your headphones with mic to get it playing. BlueGeek is right about it only working when music is open. I agree it is a pain, I used to do that all the time on some apps where I didnt like their music. Now all it does for me when I try and play the music is exit the app.
@KTK1990: Assuming you have headphones with a mic. I don't so I can't test the theory.
@BlueGeek: Yes, exactly. And I've been 1. using the Apple discussion forums to complain (along with several others, most notably 1G iPod touch users who don't have volume controls on the device *at all*) and 2. using Apple's request form to tell them to revert to the previous featureset. I also sent a rather curt email to Steve Jobs and Paul Schiller because it angers me so much. I've been fighting for a universal app sound override Settings option since September 2008.
To @EBone, @kazinstrife (and even my new friend Spinny who can't see his own comment yet): Before firmware v3.1, if you double tapped the home button while an app was running, you'd get a pop-up of the iPod controls. If you double-tap now and fix it in the Settings menu, it exits OUT of the app and takes you to the music app. Not what I'm looking for.
@Tamar Weinberg: I just tried it. Pushing center stops the game music and plays the song. But when your done, you just hear nothing. Using a 64 gig touch I purchased yesterday.
Also, all new ipods touches (g3 i know, not sure of the 8 gig), and iPhones come with the headphone with mic and volume controls.
@yardameus: Not sure about that as explained by the others in this discussion. I have General Settings Home to direct to iPod, but double tapping the home button does NOT give you iPod controls (that is, the little pop-up that isn't intrusive and is probably the only multitasking feature that exists on the iPod/iPhone). It actually exits out of the app you're running and takes you to the music, which defeats the purpose.
The problem for me is when I am running a game and want to at least have control of my music. If the game is running and the game is set to automatically turn off my music, I have no way of getting the music app again via double-tapping. And that issue is even worse for people who are running 1st gen touches because they have no access to volume control at *all*.
It's a real shame that Apple doesn't care to address this and even removed its functionality with the 3.x firmware.
@KTK1990: Maybe I need to check out those headphones. But I'm doubting it will address what is needed -- and that is, to get the iPod controls when an application actually turns off the music app.
@Tamar Weinberg: Maybe this is late for this thread, but I've found that doing a quick "lock", then double tap home, lets you see the iPod controls. Then, once you're playing what you want, unlock and resume what you were doing. Works for me.
Make sure Settings - General - Home has "iPod" selected and "iPod Controls" set to On.
@Auhim: I'm not sure what you're doing here but once a game interrupts your music that is currently playing, nothing -- not a quick lock or anything -- will restore iPod controls. And yes, I tried your solution to no avail. #iphoneos312
@Tamar Weinberg: Well, these have certainly been some delayed replies.
For me it's a double tap while the iPhone is still locked. That always brings up basic iPod controls for me no matter what's happening (or not happening) on my iPhone. Just previos/play/pause/next and, if something's playing, the basic track info.
This even works when I'm in, say, Tap Tap Revenge.
-----
I was about to send this above reply when I decided to verify. It does work when I'm in the menu of Tap Tap Revenge, but not during gameplay. However, although TTR took control of the audio, once I exited to the TTR menu out of the gameplay screen, I could then lock, double-tap home, and click play once again.
So the only time this doesn't work is when a game is actively taking over the audio. It works fine once a game lets go, sometimes without exiting the app, and you don't have to re-open the iPod app to get it to work after something else has stopped your playback. #iphoneos312
So there really is a recognized sleep issue! Wow, I thought I was crazy. I have to do hard resets of my iPhone at least twice a week, if not more, because it won't wake back up.
