<![CDATA[Apple Tells UPS To Hold Your iPhone 3GS Until "Future Delivery Date"]]> You've ordered the iPhone 3GS, Apple has shipped it, and UPS has picked it up and even taken it to your local branch... but that doesn't mean you will be getting your hands on that 3GS goodness just yet.

It looks like Apple has unsurprisingly told UPS not to jump the gun by delivering the iPhone 3GS ahead of its official release date.

People who ordered on the Apple Store have started receiving information that their packages are being held frustratingly close to their houses, but will not be making that final leg of the journey until a "future delivery date," presumably meaning the 19th. Oddly the package progress info seem to be saying the "receiver" requested the "hold for a future delivery date" though I can't imagine too many of you would have done that. [Thanks, Matthew!]

<![CDATA[Post Office Might Deliver Mail (and Gadgets and Netflix) One Less Day a Week]]> Huge deficits at the USPS might mean one fewer day of mail delivery a week, says the postmaster general. In other words, another day a week you wouldn't receive gadgets or Netflix.

The postmaster general is asking Congress to remove the requirement for the post office to deliver mail six days a week, since the USPS lost $2.8 billion last year and could lose as much as $6 billion this year, since people are mailing less crap and it costs more to deliver it. So, the postmaster general says, "It is possible that the cost of six-day delivery may simply prove to be unaffordable." Worst-case scenario surprisingly isn't cutting Saturday delivery, which I've always kind of looked at as a bonus, but actually Tuesdays, which is a pretty light day.

Who do you trust to deliver your gadgets? Personally, I prefer Fedex, but I use USPS a lot when I buy from Amazon because I'm cheap and pick free Super Saver shipping, which isn't bad. For some reason, Newegg's new Egg Saver shipping, which also uses the USPS, is pretty terrible. If there was one less day a week, would you actually change your behavior though? Like stream more movies from Netflix, switch your Gamefly subscription or use more Fedex?

I guess you could always use the pony express: [AP, Image: aubergene/Flickr]

<![CDATA[Brown Can Thrash Your Packages With A 30-Yard Delivery Toss, That's What]]> This candidate for UPS-guy-of-the-year doesn't even wait for his van to come to a complete stop before someone's brand new something gets hail-mary'd into the garage. Thankfully, a security cam captured it all.

Well done, sir. [LiveLeak via Neatorama]

<![CDATA[UPS Dumps Labels for Paper-Free Gauntlet-Cum-Printer]]> The gauntlet you see strapped to this guy's hand is HP's Handheld sp400 All-in-One, which is not only a hot fashion accessory, it scans barcodes and prints sorting info directly onto boxes (or someone's face, natch) with magic quick-drying ink, no paper label required. UPS has been testing it out at a ship center in Orlando, where they used it on 40,000 boxes with zero errors.

It replaces a whole bunch of larger, less green gear—a giant thermal printer, PC, monitor and scanner. UPS says it'll save 92,456 hours, 1,338 tons of paper and 3,807 tons of carbon emissions a year. Who ever said going green had to cost green? Next please: Package teleporters. [Treehugger]

<![CDATA[DHL Dies]]> DHL, a popular shipping alternative to FedEx, UPS and the US Postal Service, has gone belly up in the ever more fun economic crisis. Today the company announced that it will end all domestic shipping services starting January 30th (which means 9,500 layoffs) while only international shipping to/from the US will remain. Hopefully one less competitor in the ring won't increase all of our internet shipping costs too greatly. [DHL]

<![CDATA[T-Mobile G1 Now Shipping]]> According some Phandroid readers, T-Mobile is now shipping the G1 via UPS 3-day delivery. In case you just came from that five-year trip to Tierra del Fuego, the G1 is the first Google Android OS-based smartphone. This means that the phone will be in T-Mobile customer hands by, at the very latest, the 21st. [Phandroid]

<![CDATA[How To: Power Your Computer With Car Batteries]]> Taking a lesson from the Tim Allen school of modding, one man rebuilt his UPS with a bit more kick. Because the UPS was only able to run his RAID-wielding desktop for three minutes before shutting down, he decided to add two 24V car batteries to the equation (the maximum that his UPS could tolerate). The good news: it worked, and will run his computer for an hour plus.

The bad news is that these larger lead acid batteries are not sealed, and will be releasing some not-so-good gases into his computer room. Hit the movie at about halfway for the money shot. [techspot]

<![CDATA[Afternoon News: Robo-Pimpin' Ain't Easy and Some Other Stuff]]> • Traffic camera in Capitola, California is way too sensitive, issues tickets to innocent drivers 60% of the time. Makes sense to me, the only California drivers I've ever seen aren't much for speeding. [Ubergizmo]
• UPS using software to minimize left-hand turns in their deliveries, claims it will save three million gallons of gas per year. Not turning left when you have the ability is just rude to guys like this. [NY Times]
• MTV held a Rock Band competition less than a month after the game was released. I can't decide who is more pathetic, the "bands", the people who showed up to watch, or what must be a very desperate Sebastian Bach. [MTV]
• Activision gets sued for claiming Guitar Hero III is in Dolby Pro Logic II when it is actually in mono. The overly-litigious audiophiles may have a point, but they are still dweebs in my book. [Game|Life]
• Toshiba has developed a process to increase the capactiy of flash memory to 12.5GB. If terms like "double tunnel layer technology" get you more worked up than the porn you'll be storing on the drive, read on. [Electronista]

<![CDATA[Remio HC UPS/Speakers Proudly Look Like Craps]]> Looks like uninterruptible power supply manufacturer Remio has decided to try their luck with their HC series. They got some plastic cubes, make them into dice and fill them with everything they could find, from powered USB ports for charging your gadgets to audio input and output ports. They even included two speakers along with the surge protected plugs for power cords, fax and CATV coaxial connections. Full specs and a diagram showing all its faces after the jump.

<![CDATA[Belkin Battery Backup Brings Bonus Bulb]]> Not only does this Belkin Battery Backup give you six outlets, four of which are battery supported—it also has a built-in flashlight as well. This means that when your power is out, the light powers on automatically, letting you know exactly where your UPS is so you can reach under your desk and remove the flashlight.

Besides having a flashlight that's always charged when you need it, it also has a 550VA battery load capacity with 20 minutes of backup time. And at $99, it's pretty comparable to other battery backups that don't come with a flashlight.

<![CDATA[Standard Shipping, Two-Day Shipping, Drone Shipping]]> The military's billion dollar flying robots could be used for tracking UPS and FedEx packages. That's the word from Darpa's program director for Joint-Unmanned Combat Air Systems (speaking at the DarpaTech 2005 Conference). He says the unmanned, and unarmed, aircraft are outfitted with software and ground systems that have a number of potential commercial applications. Such as inspecting power lines and, well, for when you absolutely, positively have to get it there overnight.
