Here's what I need. Something like this with a built in keyboard and trackball/pad built in so that when I repair computers, I don't need to lug around a 15" monitor and keyboard. If I could just plug three cables in and a power supply, it would be so much easier to just let someone use my loaner computer and I could still work on repairs while they make me food.
@GitEmSteveDave_JustAddLabCoat: I've always wondered... What's the largest amount of porn that's been downloaded to the loaner computer when you get it back?
I got a 21.5" full HD monitor for $150. Is the fact that it's powered by USB and doesn't need a graphics card really make it only $30 less than something 3 times its size?
@mattycakes: Yes, but how many monitor ports do you have left?
When I dock my laptop, I use the laptop and other main monitor for my work (main working monitor and information display monitor). I have a 3rd little USB monitor by the side, that is dedicated to chat windows and toolbars. That way I can be talking about a spec with someone while writing it and looking at the meeting notes all at once.
So yes, they can be handy in the right circumstances. Considering that I spend about 6 hours a day, every day, at this particular monitor setup, I'd say that it becomes worth it pretty quickly.
@seishino: I'm actually only using one monitor at the moment, but since I was considering buying a second one soon I was wondering if such a tiny screen was worth the price.
But I think I may decide to pull out my old laptop and use that as my dual monitor configuration (I didn't even know that was possible, but in retrospect, I don't see why not) and then from there, decide if I need one of those tiny screens.
We'll see if I even have the desk space, but thank you for your input.
@mattycakes: synergy....kinda like another monitor, more like another awesome. Although it did take me a few minutes to set it up right, as it isn't, um, idiot proof.
@Emperor Greedo: I might get one of these if it was like $40. The problem is that for $140, most people would get more utility from a full size monitor, assuming that desk space is not a limitation.
@Hello Mister Walrus: You raise a good point. Though, depending on one's setup, one could easily make the argument that it this could be cheaper (factoring the price of a graphics card capable of dual-monitor setups). Also, lest we forget, it's entirely run on USB. Which means it's a lot more portable.
I think it has its uses, if they are pretty minimal. Though yes, a lower price point would certainly make this sell.
@Hello Mister Walrus: The point your missing is these run entirely off of USB.
If you work in a graphics-heavy environment, and already have a dual-monitor set-up and want to keep it clear of a chat client/e-mail/toolbars with out sacrificing your graphics memory...
Also, more and more people are rocking the laptop as a workstation these days. Portability would be helpful.

I heard about these new things called "netbooks"...

@Coverghost: Ignorance is bliss. I don't check.
