David Pogue visited Apple tech support and said his impression of what they go through changed after experiencing it first hand. Someone called in upset because the coffee holder that came with their desktop mac (i.e. the CD tray) kept withdrawing into the computer, spilling their coffee.

SJ: You're running what?! What the hell is that?! You know, I'll tell you what you're running - a piece of crap. You know what you need? You need the Apple II. Featuring dual disk drives, a monochrome monitor and a full IBM-style keyboard. It even runs BASIC. BOOM!

It's better, faster, and more stylish than even the IBM 8086. Those guys in New York don't know design. The x86 architecture is going to be deader than the GOP. The Apple II - that's going to last. Like disco pants and the American dominance of the auto industry.

Oh. One more thing. It comes with a little game with a turtle.

@Hilo: I doubt many people do. While there can be little doubt that he is a very determined, focused and ruthless business-person, there are many, many account of his viciousness in business dealings, and shafting people shamelessly to get what he needed.

I can't argue that he was responsible for a lot of successes (Apple and Pixar, quite notably) but he certainly doesn't seem like someone I'd want to spend any time with. He's a vicious, greedy bastard who'd sell you out in a heartbeat if he thought he could profit off your hard work and walk away clean.

@ctthoqqua: yeah, but the Commodore PET should have been called the Commodore CRAP. Commodore didn't produce a good computer until the Amiga, even while I'm fond of the C64 myself.

@ctthoqqua: And I can still play Klondike on a Packard Bell 286 running DOS 3.2 with 8MB of RAM. That doesn't mean it's a good computer.

Sorry to break it to you but the ability to run card games has never been and never will be a standard metric for gauging a computer's performance.
