Considering I have seen better blacks on non-LED backlit Samsung TVs half the price, I call shenanigans on the comparison test. That, and it looks like they have the dynamic contrast modes that everyone reviewing the TVs tells you to turn off set to high.
Ahhh Vizio, the little off brand that could. Picture isn't as nice as my 60 toshiba DLP, nor some of my buddies higher end TVs at the same size (32 inch). But there are a few higher end name brands that Ive seen exhibit ghosting that is nonexistent on my vizio. Case in point my cousin bought a Samsung for $950, picture is nice but ghosting appears in the blacks, my vizio cost half that and the image is superior.
bottom line - if you have over $2k to blow on a TV, don't get a vizio, regardless of specs. if you have $500 to blow on a tv, do get a vizio, as name brand tv's under $500 are either lower resolution or 4-6 inches smaller for the same price.
my pops has a sony that is the same size as my tv. it looks better, of course, than my vizio. but it doesn't look "costs twice as much for the same size tv" better.
Vizio can sell their products cheaper because of small differences in their products such as lower refresh rates, lower contrast ratios and fewer connection ports. When I worked at a certain un-named big box retailer that rhymes with "Rest Ruy," they briefed us on the manufacturer.
They basically buy last years components and put them into shiny cases to try and make the biggest margins possible. Alot of the innards are actually the exact same parts that Samsung uses, but when samsung stops using them to move onto bigger and better things, Vizio can snag the leftovers up at a huge discount. Not to say they make bad TV's, just not the newest tech.
@Geph_knows_more: Does it matter? Based on their sales, it seems like consumers prefer screen size to incremental quality improvements for the same price.
@Nick: Monster cables are such a joke...especially when you see what they actually cost to buy.
Rest Ruy's employee discount is 5% above cost, a few years back I bought a 50' network cable (that retailed for $49.99) for $3.15. You do the math. If everyone didn't jack the price for accessories, it would have been criminal.
Maybe I'm just a "name-brander" consumer, but I just can't get behind Vizio. They probably make respectable products that are cheaper than other manufacturers, but they just feel "cheap" to me.
@Adam Curry: i said the same thing, but then i found one on ebay for cheap. it's refurbished, but for $417 shipped and 32" 1080p i decided to give 'em a try.
remember japanese products used to be considered cheap, too. now they are the pinnacle in many cases.
they're solid to say the least. the price/feature ratio is the sweetest i've seen. biggest complaint is the typically shitty contrast ratio, but hey, a 32" 1080P w/ 2x Composite, 1x component, 3x HDMI, VGA D-Sub, stereo jack audio in and out, plus optical audio out and of course cable/RF antennae. For under $450. Not bad.
however, it's not great with dark scenes. best solution is to raise the brightness until the over-lit areas off to the side don't stand out. you're left with a black that isn't really very black at all, but totally livable.
that's with a 1300:1 ratio. i say if you have the cash, get a similar samsung with a 10,000:1 ratio. but that will end up costing you about twice as much, so be sure to REALLY think about how much you care about how black the blacks are.
@nutbastard: Yeah I would rather go with a Samsung. I've been looking for a high end small t.v. (which is pretty hard to find, and I can't really get anything big lol) and there are one or two Samsungs that are impressing me, but picture quality and all is more important to me as I have to look at it all the time. But I would also be using it as a good HD monitor, my PS3 and 360 so I want something that looks amazing.
go with a 32" samsung with a contrast ratio above 10,000:1 and a response time of 5ms or less, full 1080P of course. you can get a LN32A550 on amazon for $734 + shipping and tax. contrast that to my vizio which is 1080p, 6.5ms and only 1300:1, but which only cost $440. if blacker blacks are worth a 80% price jack, go for it, but i can't justify it personally. im upgrading from a CRT so maybe im just easier to please
that's the one, VO32LF. you wont get super dark blacks no matter how you tweak it, so let go of that notion ASAP. but that's my only complaint, and it's not really a complaint because it's totally livable.
@nutbastard: well, for the price i wasn't expecting 'em. i have a POS 19" CRT TV i pulled from a trash can 'cause my fraternity brother wasn't too bright. he thought it was broken. been using that one for years now and i think anything moving forward is a huge upgrade.
that's how i thought of it. going from an SD CRT to any kind of full HD LCD is all kinds of nice. just make sure you use HDMI for the old xbox (which will give you a nice 720p signal) and not the composite (which gives 480i). if you dont have an HDMI on your xbox (im assuming of course that you have one) then go with the component cables, which will at least give you a 480p signal.
i've said it before: standard definition (480i) never looked so shitty as it does on a high definition tv.
@Nick: I have a 47" Vizio that is an awesome TV, got it from Costco, sitting next to the toshiba and sony it looked better, im sure they just weren't calibrated but that's what im gonna keep telling myself.
You really cant beat the plethora of inputs vizio gives you for the price, and the blacks and whites are really good on blu-ray, not as good on Direct TV but their HD in dark scenes sucks some balls.
I will say, that next time i buy a new tv I will buy a vizio again.
