Fantastic idea...I really am curious as to how he suppressed background noise while recording the performances. Especially in the base track. That's a pretty crowded street, and I use pro tools pretty regularly (even though I'm by no means any kind of engineer) and the mics I record on pick up the most ridiculously subtle of noises. Kudos to the engineer here, and the street performers. I always thought it was kind of bitter-sweet watching insanely talented folks play beautiful music in the midst of such poverty. This video surely tugged at my heartstrings.
Posts like this that keep me coming back to Gizmodo, Jesus. It is the ability of the editors and writers of this site to tie in diverse, interesting, and (most of the time) on point news about gadgets and tech. A tale such as this does show how technology can make something truly inspiring now that could not have taken place at any other time in history. Thanks for the pick up!
Call me a cold hearted bastard, but I hate this totally contrived bullcrap.
To me, this is the music video equivalent of a douchebag hippie wearing a "stop global warming" shirt and bragging about his new Earth Hour bumper sticker on his Prius.
@draiko: I agree with you, I really dislike the shameless plug for their website at the end of the video, I can already imagine all the adsense dollars this guys are going to make "for the cause"
@matopete: What cause, you monkeys? WTF cares about the cause or the money? It's about the bloody music, you cynic self-absorbed grey cubicle habitants. "It's about the money!" Doh! No fucking kidding is about the money. What an amazing revelation.
@draiko: I'm not really a negative person but seriously don't troll on this one. the video isn't really the point of this, it's the music. What wouldn't you call contrived? American Idol? hahaha Some new shitty pop record? Honestly this is one of the rare moments where things don't feel contrived at all. All of the musicians that performed on this song seem genuine. I can pretty much guarantee that they are not making a profit from this in anyway. They are doing it because it was an excellent collaboration and a really cool opportunity to be part of something bigger than themselves. these people are doing it because they love music, not because they love getting paid.
@Tom_Crisis: Exactly. And if every one of them got paid, so fucking what. This is a genuine performance if there's one. These are street musicians, and amazingly good at that.
@Geisrud - MS150 fundraising time!: There is way too much talent involved with this production to be seen within 1000 miles of an American Idol production.

I also like how they physically connected them by taking Grandpa Elliott's beard with them and using it as a windscreen for everyone's mic.

It doesn't feel genuine.
