    The eye collects the intel which is stored in the hand.

    Based on a Michael Sorayama design if I'm not mistaken.

    @strider_mt2k:

    My hand only has an AM2+ socket, so I can't store the Intel there. :(

    OK, so we have the technology. We just don't have that kind of cash right now. What kind of vision could I get for a low mileage Prius?

    What's stopping someone from implanting one on the back of their head, literally having eyes on the back of their head?

    360ยบ vision FTW!

    So why'd La Forge have to wait until the 2400s for one of these?

    @ScottRose: I'm not a big fan of TNG to know much of the details, but isn't his eyes completely dysfunctional to the point that the visor has to be attached to his optical nerves?

    @Kyonko: Something along those lines.. but he got bionic eye implants (with telephoto lenses) in Star Trek VIII.

    Not that I, uh, watched the ST movies a billion times or anything.

    @Kyonko: I don't believe so, b/c in the last movie, he regained his "normal" vision while on the "special" planet.

    @Xeno has nothing useful to contribute: No, b/c he had the white "I Come In Peace" ones before, but those had to be scooped out to put the robo eyes in.

    @KeyboardPillow_GitEmSteveDave: That came out wrong. Yeah, it made him regrow them, but he had his eyes before he had them removed.

    So throw in a picomotor for magnification and zoom and you have the perfect spyborg or the ability to watch "tail" from long distances"

    @Walter VanRooyen: Heck, I know someone who had a staple gun blow up in his eye. They didn't put him under at the hospital - just gave him a local anesthesia. He got to experience his eyeball being removed from its socket while he could still see out of it! Then it stopped working due to shock. That's good because they had to remove the staple from his pupil. Both eyes working fine now, except the damaged eye doesn't dilate properly in sunlight. That pupil is egg shaped instead of round now.

    I shit you not!

    Now are you REALLY shivering??

    @Walter VanRooyen: I'm with ya. I can't bring myself to do the laser eyes.. I don't think they have enough Valium for me, though I'd be willing to test out the Valium first.

    @redman042: Here's another one:

    My dad had cancer in his eye (he's fine now, BTW), but their solution to that is as follows:

    1) Fill a small metal cup (that has flanges for sutures) with radioactive material.

    2) Sew the small metal cup to the BACK OF THE EYE (which requires some manner of moving the eye out of the way), with the radioactive material thereby shooting radiation from the back through the front of the eye.

    3) Have end user wear LEAD EYEPATCH for a week while the radiation does its stuff.

    4) Un-sew the radioactive disk from the back of the eye.

    Of course, the "radiation shooting from eye" part makes for hilarious jokes, but the rest of it makes my eye hurt thinking about it.
