Palm Fesses Up to Treo 500

We've seen enough legit-looking pictures to know the Palm 500v was real, but now we really know that it's real because Palm has confirmed the product. Coming in "glacier white" and "charcoal black" as we reported earlier, the new WM6 Palm will abandon touchscreen in favor of a Blackberry-style setup along with full QWERTY.

Of course the device is 3G and will feature SMS, IM and push email. A 2MP camera will support pictures and video, while 150MB of internal memory can be expanded through a microSD slot. And yes, there's Bluetooth. Vodafone will launch the first units in October and Palm is describing it as a premium product that will still be free with contract on most carriers. I've officially gone from hating this device to looking forward to its promise. What about you? [pocketlint]

Looks like the secret phone being unveiled at Palm's European event next week is the Windows Mobile-based Gandolf, which should be a Vodaphone exclusive. [Boy Genius Report]

Vodafone 904SH Cellphone with Face Recognition

Vodafone has rolled out an unusual 3G and GSM cellphone that gets to know you as well as your dog does. It performs this magic trick with an OKI face recognition sensor that does away with the need for entering a pin number. With a swiveling 2.4 inch screen and an 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera, the 904SH also has a motion sensor that lets you play games such as virtual golf with the thing. Using Bluetooth, it's even suggested that you could play fighting games against an opponent within that 30-foot Bluetooth limit. It's available in pleasant-looking colors such as black, powder blue and purple. No announcement of price or availability was forthcoming. More »

Samsung to Supply Vodaphone with HSDPA Tech

More big news from Samsung as the world's third largest cellphone maker announces its plans to supply UK Vodaphone with high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) mobile phones using Qualcomm's modem chips. These phones will let you use multimedia services, including video sharing and Web surfing, at higher speeds with lower pricing. They will also be the first to be commercially available. And of course, I feel that I must point out that we here in the US won't actually be seeing any of this as we wait (and wait, and wait) for our 3G services. More »

Well-Featured Vodaphone

The Vodaphone V604SH is one of those phones that really does make me jealous of Asian technology. It comes in three different color schemes—turquoise & black, white & silver, and black & red— and it's got some really great features I just don't expect to see here in the US for a really, really long time. Along with an analog TV tuner, it also includes a 32MB mini SD card and has a 3.2 megapixel camera with 2x optical zoom and automatic focus. It's a clamshell phone with a 2.4-inch display, weighs in at 5 ounces and can also tune into local FM radio stations. More »
