Think of the security when you teach your Eee Klingon!

Then you'll only have other Klingons to worry about.

A speech computer interface is inevitable, and every year the technology advances, but I doubt that Asus is the one that's going to finally make it happen for the masses, at least in the near term. Hardware and software need a few more years to mature before this is going to be more than a gimmick.

You know those nights where you're relaxing on the couch and then your mom girlfriend comes home and she's asking about your day? You know how it seems like a lot of work to talk at that moment? Sometimes I just don't feel like moving my mouth, and moving my fingers over a keyboard seems much easier.

Plus, factor in the cost of having to drink more liquids because your throat is drying up, the added noise in your home from everybody talking, etc.

Dudley: I guess I need to search alternative specs.

    Computer: Searching "alternative sex"

    Dudley: What? No!

    Computer: Two million websites found.

Dudley: I didn't want to search that! I said *specs*... all the data to be compiled.

If my 3G were as reliable as AT&T's coverage maps suggest, I might be thrilled about this, especially as someone who uses GOOG-411 and GOOGL really quite often.

In the meantime, I'll reserve judgment until I can see how long it takes via EDGE and just how retarded the results are.

@Gilbert: Truth. Here in NYC, 3G speed sometimes meantimes sub-EDGE speed. And it's not getting any better any time soon now that the Bold is out.

@OMG! Ponies!: think there was a study showing iPhone users taking up 70% of AT&T's 3G bandwidth....

    guess who can we blame?

@taking_this_easy: Umm.. AT&T for not screwing enough new cellsites in the ground to support the coverage map they promised and not backhauling out enough capacity to the cell sites to meet all of the demand for the service they sold us?

Seriously, I (like many thousands of others) take the train to and from the Chicago Loop and the burbs every day, and I still see spots on my commute where there's EDGE only or no coverage at all, and I still watch the phone grind and grind when it's trying to hand up to 3G or down to EDGE.

It's not the end users' fault, it's AT&T's for over-promising and under-delivering. If I had to do it again, I would've held out to at least try the new Blackberry Storm on Verizon's network.

Of course Safari still crashes like a mo-fo months after release and that's Apple's fault, not AT&T, but it's still real darn hard for me to recommend this network or this phone to friends, and I really *wanted* to like this thing. :(

@max_k: Must be an american thing.. here in Canada, Rogers 3G is blistering fast and it has quite the coverage too. Anyone familiar with the 401 corridor here in Ontario should note that 3G sticks with my iPhone from London until Port Hope (about 250km).. That's quite the coverage.

@max_k: They also need to get easements for the transmitters. No one is going to so much as install a screw without a piece of paper saying they can.

@OMG! Ponies!: Well, I guess I shouldn't complain then. Here in Los Angeles, when it's 3G with decent signal strength, it's definitely an improvement.

I guess that's another reason I'm happy I moved back here.

You know, plus the smog and traffic and snooty and the like...

@max_k: My Safari crashes incessantly. The best part was where I had a "diagnostic" done at the Apple store and their "statistics" said Safari hadn't crashed once. They were, of course, quick to point out fault in third-party apps, even going so far as to insinuate they had something to do with the Safari mishaps.

And then they offered to restore my phone.

That's when I took out my aluminum brick.

@robot-shmobot: If the US was prepping the transition to McCain and not Obama, I would seriously think about joining you up in the cold, cold north.

And given your assertions about speed, I could almost, almost justify a tethering fee.

Then again, why pay when it can be free?
