In my area tap water is ok. You can drink it and it doesn't taste bad. But there are enough regions where you can't drink it. That whole reducing 'carbon footprint' thing still has me sceptical though.

Bottled water will always win. Sure a carton may be better for the EARTH, but bottles are better for PEOPLE.

With bottled water you can open/shut it, not have to worry about it flipping over and spilling (with the lid on, of course) and you can easily carry it around (ie: the mesh holders on backpacks).

I'm sorry but a lot of urban area tap water is freaking horrendous tasting. Which basically means you need to install a damn water filter. So, $5 a week on bottles you can take to work w/ you, or $10 on a bottle to drag with you, and a few grand for the filtration system + ongoing maint costs.

LIKE WINE: I age my tap drinking water. I let it breath for a couple of days. This gives time for the chlorine to dissipate. Tastes great! Save $$$! No problem.

I am no expert, but from what I understand the most sizable percentage of carbon emissions comes from shipping the product - not from the plastic bottle. No question, if you have to pick between boxed water and bottled water, at least the box and bio-degrade in less than a million years. Still, if the idea is to help our planet, bottled water is 'really bad' and this product is just plan 'bad'.

@Shamoononon thinks twitter sucks: Water quality is very location-specific. I love the tap version where I live now, but when I was in school the local golf course had a sign warning of the high arsenic content in their water traps. I didn't drink the tap water there.

@Darrone: Fiji water. Imported from fricking FIJI. That's near Australia! Twice as far away as Hawaii! Yet it's brought by boat or plane to the corner store in New York City, 8000 miles away. Eight Thousand Miles.

This is not a business model that should survive the recession.

@bandit: Boat shipments are more cost effective and energy efficient than pretty much anything else.

If you're in NYC for example, it's arguably "better" to eat olives from Italy than radishes from Ohio.

Which is not to say that I don't agree that it's relatively absurd and prefer to drink my water from the NYC tap.
