@vapour: I want to defend Iron Man because I enjoyed it (but then, I enjoy superhero movies so much I like Wolverine). But you're definitely responding to a real deficiency.
/Film had an article recently where Jeff Bridges says that they had no script. I mean, as much as I like overly-simplified archetypes pummeling each other with obvious winners...the script was lacking. And this revelation is unsurprising.
Not that I couldn't believe a couple of electrical whips would be handy, but wouldn't that make it more difficult to do other things? I mean, what if he wants to grab Iron Man by the the throat? Or grab his girl and pull her in while she screams for him to let her go? And you can forget about twiddling your fingers in an evil manner with those things strapped to your hands.
Also, I look forward to the day when somebody in one of these movies doesn't have an arc reactor in their chest. I mean, seriously? Iron Man, whatever the villian from the first movie was, War Machine, and Whiplash? Somebody needs to spill some radioactive chemicals in this universe.
@NaeemTHM: Elements from the Mandarin concept was taken, along with the Ten Rings, and reduced to a terrorist group (remember when the leader of the group mentions Genghis Khan), which Iron Man defeated.
The comic book Mandarin's story is a bit too out there for this movie. The whole thing deals with aliens and whatnot. It would seem a little out of place.
@Kaiser-Machead: well i never read iron man comics alot but i am familiar with somethings about it, doesnt the whole alien thing only relate to the mandarins rings which were crystals that were found in a crashed space ship that was owned by fing fang foom? or is there more to the aliens and mandarins origin i dont know about.
couldnt they just for the sake of normality have mandarin in the movie without going into great detail about the rings.......they could do some hollywood BS where they come up with something thats not at all in the comics and say he found the rings in a cereal box of sugar crisp as a child or something?

I'll still watch the next one.

Is it me or do they seem like really silly weapons with a high degree danger for the user?
Just imagine if AfroNinja used 'em.

Spiegel fails to see the receding hairline.
Spiegel wonders if photoshop was used to doctor said receding hairline.
Spiegel has bacon and has stopped thinking about the aforementioned receding hairline.
