I use an N dedicated wireless bridge (shares with a couple of other devices) and find that an HD television show transfers slightly faster than play speed. What is the usual performance with the G adapter? #wifi
@Canoehead: i use a wireless G bridge shared with other devices and i don't have any trouble streaming The Office in HD. admittedly the other devices are not usually active, but the wireless network is running mixed mode and has some active N devices on it too. was thinking about upgrading the N-bridge, but i'd still need a legacy base station for Wii and PS3 :-p #wifi
@Accelerata: I put in the bridge to feed the Tivo, Popcorn Hour and Wii in the bedroom. It works pretty well, and was a lot cheaper than a proper cable run. #wifi
N is great but no one should buy this. I bought the Netgear wnhde111 wireless N bridge kit for $85 on ebay. This gives 2 devices that can be used as access points routers or bridges and a spare port for my PS3. #xbox360wirelessnnetworkingadapter
@Xeno: To the properly informed tech geek that's a hell of a deal. Your average 12 year old parent wouldn't know what the hell to do with the kit though. Thus the overpriced N adapter is born. #xbox360wirelessnnetworkingadapter
@tok3ninja: The thing is that with the netgear kit you just flip a switch to auto on both units and plug them in and it works. They are really simple, I only customized the setup cus' I'm a geek. #xbox360wirelessnnetworkingadapter
Another sad example of Microsoft copying from Apple - this time, stealing the "why build it in when we can charge separately for the parts" strategy. #xbox360wirelessnnetworkingadapter
@Kaiser-Machead: So what does it all mean basil? Will we be seeing new chips entering the iTouch and iPhone or will they just keep it the same and activate them when the time comes? #cellphones
@opanitch: It's possible that the broadcom chip in the iPods will not be activated with N, and that its inclusion was a matter of cost than capability. If they DO decide to activate it for whatever reason, no doubt it will involve a charge to do so. #cellphones
I'm taking Amtrak out to visit my old school for Halloween (gas is expensive, and I'm too lazy to drive 3 hours). I was actually thinking "have they gotten Wifi yet?"
Guess not :/ #gizmodoremainders
Amtrak really isn't that bad. I used to dog it big time but I actually enjoy riding it between KC and Chicago. It's nice not being in a rush. I know it's kind of an old fogey way to go but I like being able to plug in my laptop in an AC outlet and watch movies. It neat watching the countryside go by, especially when the weather is bad. I've seen cars come to a crawl and there I am going about 65 and making good time to my destination. I don't have to worry about driving or driving for the other person in the car. I can walk around and stretch my legs without loosing time at a truck stop, although truck stops have their own special allure. I can also take a whiz when I want without having to exit at a dodgy Kum 'n' Go (they actually exist primarily in Nebraska). Oh and I can lay down in my sleeper and take a nap without being disturbed by whiny kids or annoying people. All in all it's pretty nice. #gizmodoremainders
@UGAdawg: Agreed. I especially love the "sounds" of rail travel, too, and the subtle rocking of the cars.
Unfortunately, here on the east coast, tickets are pricey as hell (they may be in the midwest, too, though; I dunno), so they can really hurt the bank account. While the Wi-Fi would be a seriously awesome addition to the experience, I'm afraid that it would slim down some wallets with inflated ticket prices. That would likely be rough on a lot of travelers, even if they're not using the service. #gizmodoremainders
@Gordonium: It's probably priced differently in the NE corridor. Considering it's the most highly used in terms of train travel they make up for it. Plus it's the only form of long distance transport that will take you from city center to city center that doesn't require driving or taking the dreaded Greyhound. Depending on the cost it might be worth it. I can imagine it would cost about the same as a paperback, which is something I end up getting before a train trip anyway. I wouldn't mind spending it on WiFi and watching my Slingbox or Hulu. #gizmodoremainders
@UGAdawg: I really enjoyed riding the train too. Normal, IL to Raton, NM. good trip.
It's slower than flying, but they don't check your bags (don't read into that) and you can carry as much as you want, you are always free to "roam about the cabin", and you meet interesting people (lots of amish).
the sound is pretty soothing, to me. #gizmodoremainders
Imagine that. Gadget lovers who enjoy something as old fashioned as a train ride. I also like the fact that they don't check the bags in a traditional sense. Plus I hate taking out my laptop and putting it in it's own bin and my shoes as well. It's just a big production. I think that's what you meant ColbertSuperNation. Shenanigans never crossed my mind.
I hear you on the cooking tablet -- the second that thing can double as a cutting board, I'm shelling out cash for it. Until then, it's just waiting to be ruined almost immediately. #gizmodoremainders
@Gordonium: Now if your whole kitchen counter was a Surface Computer that showed you step by step what to prepare (and let you cut on it) and stuff #gizmodoremainders
@denisnossevitch: You know I had the urge to shake that tablet because it did remind me of an Etch-a-Sketch. Man I was the queen of drawing steps on that thing. #gizmodoremainders
@OMG! Ponies!: You snot noised brat!!! No other way to say it, your stupid! Can't believe some idot even wrote that!!!!! You want to be jobless you little dick prick? I work for automakers, ALL. ONLY GM and FORD use american made parts. Most parts going into your toyota's and honda's and others are from other countries. So a company, let's toyota, builds a assembly plant in america and dumb asses like you think wow, it's american made and they employ americans. News for you, you dumb piece of shit, they only employ the 2-3000 people working there, big fucking deal. 1 GM assembly plant buys it's PARTS from american suppliers and indirectly employs over 200,000 people. Big fucking difference. yes UAW sucks ass, but reality is unless you idoits start buying ford or GM you will see millions of jobs lost! Come on be smarter, do so research before you open your mouth!!! I wish I could educate everyone but I realized there will always be MORONS like you, and your to stupid to educate enough to see the light. dumbass!!!!!!!

@OMG! Ponies!: I'm less concerned about whether the employees are unionized and more concerned that American companies are being destroyed and Americans are losing their jobs.
@troyolson92: I've thought of whether to respond or not. And I choose to.
First of all, for the record, my comment wasn't one of my trademark trollmines.
It was a facetious jab at the notion that cars like the Toyota Prius* are in line with the majority of the liberal agenda.
I say the Prius because it is notoriously a "statement" car. Sure, it's SULEV, but it is also a major donor to the GOP because of its staunch anti-union stance. The Toyota, Honda, and Nissan plants in Kentucky, Alabama, and Mississippi are the reason that the Senators of those States were so firmly against bailing out GM.
I also say this on the heels of last night's "Daily Show" which featured a segment on this kind of product identification. It's kind of silly to boycott a company because its CEO writes an Op-Ed out of line with your liberal views and then buy a car from a company whose corporate practices are even farther out of line.
Welcome to the Internet. You need to settle the fuck down and realize that sometimes, people say facetious things on blogs. How you have managed to live in America in the 21st Century and still not comprehend the notion of "sarcasm" is fucking inconceivable.
*Fair disclosure: I drive a Honda Insight. I drive it because it was free. I do like some of the features in the new Ford models but I like that my car gets 50+ mpg with 78k miles more. #xbox
@troyolson92: You're argument is that Ford and GM are the best because use American made parts and employ Americans to assemble their cars. Are American made products imbued with some special magic properties that make them greater than products made elsewhere? Are they indestructible? Near wear out or break down?
And how about those American workers. If some of my coworkers are to be used as any indicator then I'd say they're lazy, incompetent sacks of shit who care more about collecting a paycheck then actually doing their job the correct way. And what of the unions? Cars were manufactured long before unions came around and I suspect if the UAW was disbanded tomorrow, we'd still be building cars. Unions are also one of the factors in why car prices are what they are today.
I got a new car once. It was a Ford and it was a piece of shit so sorry, but the whole Buy American thing doesn't really carry as much weight with me anymore.
