    slow news day?

anyone with a decent receiver that upconverts everything can get better, even up to 1080p upconversion, but as you can see from the image above upconversion isn't that great. The picture isn't that crisp all around.

I was gaming on my wii day one at 1080p, but didn't consider it be to "news". unfortunately, I stopped gaming on the wii as soon as I finished mario galaxy (about 1 week before it was released and two days after "getting" it).

Very cool, given this I'm surprised they didn't just add HD-out right off the bat...it shouldn't have added too much to cost or manufacturing issues...given that it's just an output not extra processing, etc.

@TheCrudMan: No, it IS extra processing. The Wii renders games at roughly 640x480 (possibly 800x480, but I don't believe so). 720P HD is about 1280x720. That's a LOT more pixels to render, and would substantially decrease the framerate of Wii games.

The Wii DOES have an HD output (component, which supports 720p/1080i), but the Wii only passes an SD signal over it.

@typoink: Maybe they can produce a Sega 32x-like extra component that you can Voltron onto your Wii and give it more power. Wishful thinking...

@32ndnote: GIMP. I found a tutorial online. It's mostly making a multi-layered file, then setting the delay in the name of the layer. That's the tough part, getting the timing right. The bad part is that since photobucket allows you to get stats on your images, I have found people hotlinking my picts, taking my bandwidth, so I have to watermark them all now.

Must... resist... laughing... * years? 3 years, even? Wow. That's quite a bold statement considering most people don't play their Wii more than a couple months before moving on to something with more depth. Oh, and good luck trying to sell a non-HD console to Americans that are finally going digital in a matter of days.

@pmindemann: I guess I'm having a disconnect here. But where does the DTV transition come into buying a non-HD console?

@nukee: Go try to buy a non-HDTV at Wal-Mart. Except for the clearance TVs that some stores may have, they should all be HDTVs now. While yes, having a digital tuner is different than being HD, mandatory digital tuners and the switch to digital broadcast is what has really pushed the demand for HDTVs hard because it has also encouraged more and more things to be broadcast in HD, especially since a lot of people used the transition as a justification to get a better TV rather than just getting a tuner.

What does it mean the the PS3 is a 'ten year console'? I know it's still new and all but are they really going to wait 10 years for another playstation? I don't see the need for another one anytime soon, but just wondering if that's what that means.

@mfischer579: Not necessarily that there won't be another system for 10 years, but that the system will still be marketable for 10 years. By that logic, the PS2 is already a 9 year console and could possibly make it to 10 years (in Japan, still a few months short in the U.S.)

@ceilingFANBOY: Plus there are diminishing returns to console processing power. The graphics quality gap between the PS2 and PS3 is huge, but how much better can a future PS4 actually be? The PS3 already outputs 1080i at basically photo-realistic quality. The limiting factor to game detail is now the talent/number of game artists you hire, not whether or not the console can handle it.

With Microsoft and Sony closing the gap between heavy gamer device and happy-funtime accessory console, the Wii would experience a great deal of turbulence in less than half that time. 3 years is certainly doable, unless the other two suddenly close the gap completely with lots of time-killer games that use motion controls. Nintendo would be stupid to let the Wii stagnate that long.
