You city slickers need to quit being afraid of the wildlife. 90% of it won't do anything to you, unless you threaten it first. Seriously, wolves, black bear, snakes, etc, they just want to be left alone.
If I see an adult black bear, just keep a safe distance, and no trouble. If I see a cub, and no adult, REALLY keep my distance. Mommy is somewhere, and she doesn't like stupid white guys messing with her cubs.
Judging by the spotlights setup and food strewn about, i'm guessing this person baited the bear. That's a pretty damn stupid and irresponsible thing to do. It's behavior like that that can cause someone to get seriously hurt/killed or lead to the bear having to be killed because it thinks it found a nice new source for food.
@szrimaging: Usually a hunting license gives you license to hunt a particular type of animal in a particular location -- and that location is not commonly your front patio. Regardless, baiting an animal like that is a darwin award waiting to happen. Survival of the fittest.
@trs: I know some people that are baiting them right to their cabin in Wisconsin.
And In MI and Wisconsin, usually the permit, at least for deer, not positive on bear, allows you to hunt anywhere in the state as long as it meets certain rules (i.e. distance from other houses, roads)
That third video? Picture it, but add a full bottle of rum in my hand and make it in a city parking lot. The bleeding went on for a while but I smelled delicious.
Other than murder I think home invasion/robbery is the worst crime on the planet. I wouldn't give a shit if that camera was armed with a flamethrower and she crispified the bastards
Gizmodo Commenter Challenge: I will gamble $100 to the whomever responds to this comment who ponies up an equal challenge of fair value *against* this being A BULLSHIT VIRAL MARKETING TECHNIQUE.
I think anyone who believes this to be authentic to be a hopeless rube, and I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is.
Terms: If in any way this woman is found suspect by state or federal authorities within 90 days, I win the bet. If she clears a 90 day window without being found suspicious, I lose.
I leave it to the badass editors of Giz to revise the exact terms.
@erikislame: As I said before, this is a case of confirmation bias. She has probably checked that camera hundreds of times before, when she got "a feeling". But she won't remember those times. She WILL remember when she does it and actually sees something.
The Logitech Orbit Cam that I use on my website, [PorkRollAndEggs.com] , is a PTZ(pan, tilt, zoom) cam that has facial tracking. If one day it caught a picture of my cats holding pencils and using calculators to figure out Fermats Last Theorem on the floor, and they interviewed me, I'd be saying pretty much the same thing. "Oh this cam was great. I got it on discount on Black Friday in 2007 and it only cost me 19 dollars. It hooks into my USB and I use Yawcam to upload the pictures to the web....." It's an egotistical thing, actually. She's bragging about how she spent so little, and how HER idea to buy this camera and use THIS service saved her home from theft and brought two criminals to justice.
I don't see what was offensive about this interview. The woman didn't go out of her way to make a distinction that she was robbed by a pair of black men, she was just mentioning the identity of her robbers.
@Deaf Mute: actually, nobody asked for a description, the woman just said that she turned on the cam and saw a black man standing in her living room.......
@uttc16: To go with my fellow Canadian, Russel Peters... they're not African American, they're American. They've probably never even been to Africa. The woman was describing who was in her house, what's wrong with saying "black"? It's quick and accurate. I don't get upset if I get called "white" instead of "Caucasian". Indians (not "Native Americans" or "First Nations"), those from India, don't mind being called "brown", so what's the problem?
Race and colour is something far too many people get upset about.
I seriously hate anything PC, but, the issue is that if it were a white guy, she likely would have omitted his race and simply said "there is someone in my house", beyond that, and as others have stated, the description was totally unsolicited.
The issue is that two people are in her house who should not be. There were ONLY two people there; a description wasn't necessary at all.
@daPrinz: Aside from the fact that it sounds like you're overcompensating -- like saying you have a black friend; when do you say she is half black? How often do you have to state what race she is, or, do you simply introduce her by name and race? If you are volunteering her race to people, it would indicate to me that you think of her as a novelty.
Interesting. What strikes me as notable is the nonchalant way she says "I turned on my camera, and there was this black man standing in my living room"....Almost like there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with the fact that, instead of pointing out any other characteristic she pleased (man wearing a hood/man sagging his pants) or just saying "man", she chose to highlight the color of their skin as if that somehow explained the actions he was involved in. Repressed racism is even funnier than outright racism. Wonder how many times she's dropped the N word today simply explaining this story to people she is close to....
@TheSonOfKrypton: If her local 911 is anything like mine, then the first thing that would have been asked by the operator, "Are they black, or mexican?" Seriously, and that has happened more than once when I have called 911 in my area.
Now THAT is racist, if not some sad statistic/stereotype in my area (I'm not inferring anything, just saying it stuck out to me that they said that), but my point is that if the lady didn't say they were black, the 911 operator would have asked in some way (which I would imagine is easier just to ask what ethnicity they are instead of what my racist operators said).
Robbed...robbed...robbed...nobody got robbed. Her house was being burglarized, not robbed. Robbery is a crime against the person, which means that the victim has to be present in order to be robbed. Common mistake, but they are two very distinct crimes.
Now that that's out of the way, it's common for victims of crime, no matter what race, to identify the race of the person perpetrating the crime if that race is different than that of the victim (or witness). If the perpetrators had been white, she (most likely) would have said "these two guys". If she was black and the perpetrators were black, she would still say "these two guys". Still, if you're doing an interview, after the fact, that you know will be broadcast nationally, it looks like you'd think enough just to say, "these two guys".
@yelraf: So we can't call black people black people? I guess that means we can't call white people white people, right? How about we all just kill ourselves now.
@Xjep: Someone's never seen Lindsay Lohan naked/Adam Savage then. Talk about a sheet of paper white.
@yelraf: I went to high school in Newark, NJ, and had my car burgeled more than once. When I would tell people in school, I would say "They stole my hubcaps", as I had no clue who had done it. One day, a kid, who, when OJ was found not guilty in the criminal trial, was running screaming down the hallway and opened every classroom door(including the one my English class was in) to shout "WE WON!!!", turned at me and said "What do you mean, "they"? You mean black people?!?". I said, "No. I mean theives. People who steal things from other people, like the ones who stole from my car. I don't think, like you do, that only one race/color steals. That's a stereotype." He got this dumb look on his face and walked away.
I dont believe it. In the whole video i never saw anybody pick stuff up and put it in their vehicle only two guys walking around and pointing. I would think that most thieves just want to get in and get out as quickly as they can. And 18 police cars and Swat? I dont know why they would send that many cops.
@Wilky_McBadass: Probably a small town and/or a slow day. When I worked at a gas station, at like 2am, if one cop car pulled someone over, at least one other car would come along, mostly b/c they were bored, and needed something to do.
@BuildABearGroupMember_GitEmSte...:if you see 2 cop cars pulling someone over in mn, it's because they are doing a DWI, and the second car is for observation and confirmation.
@godwhacker, intolerant and proud of it!!!: This was NJ. And in listening to the interview again, she said "Her neighbors said there were 18 cars." So it's a third hand account.
Um... what is there not to buy? The Smoking Gun has posted the police report, and a link to the 911 call and the webcam footage (posted to YouTube by what appears to be the Boynton Beach Police Department).
Which part of this story do you doubt? And what is your alternate explanation - that this is all some sort of grand publicity stunt by the makers of the webcam, and all these different media organizations are unknowingly or knowingly assisting in this stunt?
@spannu: It's called confirmation bias, and is usually a logical fallacy. It's the same thing when people have a dream about a plane 200 days a year, but never think about it. But the day it happens and a plane somewhere has an accident, they say "I predicted it". It's also the same reason John Edwards hasn't been strung up as a witch. In his style of cold reading, you forget the misses and remember the "hits".
@kylo4iskyle4: I have wondered if anyone would tell me if someone was breaking into my house. I think the ComputerCam would freak them out, as it's a PTZ cam that follows you as you walk around the room, and you can hear it whizzing around.

on a side note, I would not at all be surprised if this was a viral campaign for the Panasonic NetCam system.

rape: feeling of violation and insecurity
home invasion: feeling of violation and insecurity, AND your stuff is gone

It's Glenn Beck level of insanity to compare rape to someone walking into your house and taking your TV.
