Seriously, sometimes I think you guys are shills for Microsoft and the Palm Pre; getting paid to make these redundant posts.
It really doesn't deserve a dozen posts every week over the same bloody news about the same bloody information. The beta expires the same day anyways. Windows 7 is a definite improvement over Vista. . . but that isn't saying much, in fact, its merely what Vista should have been in the first place.
@Scaramanga: There a lot of Windows 7 posts because it is a beta testing of an operating system from Microsoft on an unprecedented scale. A lot of people here have downloaded the beta and are running it. So the tips are helpful to those around.
As to the Palm Pre, there is about one article a day (max) on it. I'd expect there to be an article a day on it given the importance of the Pre to the tech industry. In the Nineties, PALM was a company of similar stature to RIM. It's name was synonymous with business. It's offerings stagnated and when smartphones rolled around, PALM was left behind by Treo and RIM. The Pre will likely make or break PALM.
On top of that, it has managed to win good press from the likes of David Pogue, a notoriously Apple-friendly tech reviewer. In case you don't know, Mr. Pogue is the tech reviewer for the NYTimes. That's tens of millions of people who will read a review.
The Pre is being viewed as competition for the iPhone. It is PALM's JesusPhone literally. If it sells well, it could redeem PALM and raise it's stock from the dead.
I'm sorry that you don't like reading about Windows and the Palm Pre. Perhaps you should read Macworld. You should be able to find it pre-bookmarked for you in Safari.
C'mon, I LOVE to bitch and moan like the best of 'em, but one thing you'll see is that Gizmodo goes nuts on the topics of the moment. No half measures.
As much as it annoys me sometimes to see stuff I'm NOT into, I'm also very happy to see similar treatment given to stuff I AM into.
I downloaded the Win7 beta but haven't installed it yet.
Gizmodo's treatment of the various ins and outs is getting me off the fence to try it this weekend.
Just try to roll with it is what I'm trying to say.
Tomorrow or the next day they'll be on something you're more into.
My friend downloaded the Windows 7 beta to his MacBook, and other than the fact that he can't watch his porn without the sound messing up, it woks fine.
@Philip Marquis: Vista only uses about 1.3 GB on my 6 GB of ram system and that's with me running a lot of background services. I have 40 MB of RAM free because of super-fetch which doesn't get in the way.
For those of us who don't feel like googling right now how does MS's public betas work for things like operating systems? I've used betas of ie but I don't expect to pay for those at any point where as upgrading to Windows 7 would be $$$. Does the beta shut down when they start selling it?

I really have to get used to the new taskbar though, I think it is REALLY ugly because it is suddenly so big.
For the rest, it's hard to see the big difference from Vista, apart from the new UAC (YAY)

lets put it this way..
vista 64 bit with 8 gigs of ram uses about 5 gigs of ram
7 64 bit uses about 2 gigs of ram with 8 gigs installed

64-bit apps take up more memory than their 32-bit siblings. So you'd gain only about 600MB of usable RAM.
