Speaking from a neutral standpoint, I totally get it when Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone in 2007. He was doing that 'business chart' that showed how complicated dumbphones were and how even more asinine some smartphone developers, ending up with even more inconsistent and convoluted interfaces.
Some manufacturers really (and I mean REALLY) need to go back to the paper napkins to draw and map out user interfaces that are simple, effective, contagious, and universal.
Can't say I disagree with anything in this review. Samsung needs to take a good look at their phones and realize that nobody with a functional cerebral cortex considers their UIs as intuitive.
It's a shame because their hardware is top notch. The other day, I bought a Sammy F400 B&O edition as a backup phone. Brilliant sound output, but I can't for the love of god; figure out how their menu system worked.
"It gives you a headache to use, like reading tiny text in the dark, or reciting the alphabet backwards when drunk"
Whenever I see Cops where they make drunk people recite the alphabet backwards, it scares me. I don't think I could do that sober without having to think a lot.
With respect to the review, for some reason I couldn't stop laughing as I was reading it. The tone of your writing just seems like you are genuinely frustrated and it's quite funny. The first two lines summarized how the review was going to go and everything after that was just a bonus.
You guys can tell that a phone is going to suck. Why do you review phones that look like crap? I mean, you couldn't smell the sweet scent of [insert disgusting smell] from a mile away? I know I could.
Honestly, if you're using the phone like this video (aka using your index finger), you're still using two hands: who puts down a cell phone to enter text?
I suppose they didn't use the thumb because it would occlude the screen more, but it'd be a much more "honest" test if they showed actual use (holding it in one hand and using a thumb, or two hands and using one index finger) rather than this setup. Also, the way they used it, it was using the wrist and arm more than the finger itself, which itself seems a bit more tiring and awkward.
@Geisrud: Compare how fast you type on QWERTY and DVORAK and tell us which is faster for you...
Doesn't mean it is the best unless you have had equal practice with both...
What we come down to, is how fast you can learn and make a good enough speed improvement to continue using it to become even better.
This looks like it is VERY easy to learn, if nothing at all.
T9 is good, T9 is great if you learn how to quickly switch words, deal with punctuations, switch to tap mode to insert (and add) new words/names... sadly most people don't do this because they are stupid shits and prove this by typing in "text" speak. Mix T9 and auto complete sweet... not the best on touch screens that have shitty feedback/feeling.
How would this work for people using the Columbus method of typing (ya know - Search and Land)? They'd end up with gibberish as they swirl their finger looking for where the damn "R" is

...and It's a dumbphone.
Sufficed to say, I sold it within a day.

Windows Mobile is shit. I worked with it for 3 years. Over at XDA chefs do all they can to make it better but at the end of the day, it's shit.
Most of the disguises that phone makers use to cover this shit known as WM with turn out just as bad.
I seriously don't understand how people still stick to WM. Freaking symbian functions/looks better, crashes/freezes less.

I agree I'm probably not going to hold of any phone purchase because of it but they could surprise us.

Remember when only a couple cell phones had a detachable camera feature?
BTW, can I just ask that for now on pico projectors be referred to as PPs?
So in the near future, someone will ask if your new phone has a PP and if so, what size.

Compare how fast YOU type on Swype vs iPhone, then report back. Faster or not, that's the comparison that needs to be made.
