i really liked windows 7 at first but problems networking have soured it on me. i use my machine to stream audio and video to my plasma and i just won't play nice with my xbox 360. And i can't add any libraries. Just nothing happens. Had to go back to xp.
Another thing. in the last 5 days windows 7 has slowed to a crawl. haven't installed anything but it's hanging a lot. hope they sort that out.
@subsider34: funny you mention that. It crashed trying to send feedback. true story. I tried twice. it tries for about a minute then you get an error that says feedback not sent.
"Previously, setting up a Windows network was akin to getting your teeth pulled out with anesthesia. "
erm how?
all I've ever done, is load network card drivers (if not already loaded) plug cables into machines, plug into hub / switch / router, set workgroup or domain, enable file sharing, set user to require password.
done.
that simple! (and I've been doing that since windows 3....)
@KhaiJB: Ever tried sharing between Vista Home Premium and Windows XP Home Edition? NOT fun. And no, this wasn't a wireless network. It was on a conventional RJ45 Network.
The main problem? You can't figure out how to grant another computer access to your files. I found "Share", "Advanced Share", and then there was the "Share Files & Folders" option. No matter what combination I tried, the only way to do it seemed to be granting the users (individually) co-ownership of my files (with a separate account on each pc. Apparently this is endemic to Vista attempting to share with Win XP and vice versa.
@subsider34: well I'm sharing between a Linux box, 3 Windows XP Pro and a Vista Home Basic...
with no issues other than the problem you noted... and found it was a password issue. you need the same user on each machine with the same password. but when it comes down to it, that's basic networking practice in the first place.
trust me. put that in place and it'll work just fine.
@jdale: It's less functional if you're a physics or engineering student. On the other hand, if you are a physics or engineering student... why the hell don't you have a dedicated TI graphing calculator?
@moron: Really? Overall Win7 seems pretty darn sexy and fast to me.
Whereas Leopard was the equivalent of an aging whore reapplying makeup and putting on shiny costume jewelry. That was a lot to spend for no speed increase and iffy results. But then again, probably worth it if you wanted to run 64bit Windows XP so you could play games...
Which comes in handy during the age of frozen loans and home foreclosures. How about a calculator that will assist in determining unemployment payments?
@alan_gen: The default is pretty much the standard Windows calculator. The extra functions are available by selecting them via the Options on the pulldown menu.
If the features of an upgrade don't seem appealing, the don't upgrade your software. I know people who still use Office 2003 because they hate the ribbon.
As a recovering caveman, I can tell you with some certainty that I can do this. The bigger question would be why it wasn't always this easy? And, no replies from Mac users, please. Damn showoffs.
