Hmmmm....I'm not sure whether to risk breaking everything :( I've got til March do it I guess...I have my copy of Windows 7 but its Home Premium which I got dirt cheap through college #windows
@Ketch2k8: Let me save you some trouble: it won't work.
As a couple others here have mentioned since you commented, the beta/RC are for Windows 7 Ultimate. Unless you're staying with Ultimate, you still won't be able to upgrade, so save yourself the trouble and do a clean install. #windows
@tricky1: I'm more than happy to be proved wrong if it means something will work right. But man, opening with "let me save you some trouble", and then going into a registry edit....you're positively begging my sarcasm cannon to open fire. ;-)
Anyways, best of luck to anyone interested in trying this out. I'll likely be going from Ultimate to Ultimate when the time comes. And by that point, this thread will be long since dead. Have fun, you guys! #windows
You forgot the chapter about cupping Bill's balls while you blow him. If you are going to buy 7, then you obviously forgot what a joke Vista was or you just like paying to get drilled up the ass. How many times do you want to buy a new version of a sun dried turd? I moved to Linux from Windows and will never go back. Windows is a freaking bad dream that never ends. BTW, Microsuck won't suffer from Vista's epic letdown; people like you will run out and buy it.
Linux-because restarting your system is only for new hardware installations, not daily usage.
So basically, both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard are under-the-hood overhauls to their corresponding predecessors? In other words, making them what they should've been in the beginning?

probably a pain in the @$$ to upgrade to Windows 7. Upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard the friday it was released. changed about 3 or 4 computers to Snow Leopard. No problem at all and it didnt even take that long.
I've installed both on my Mac Pro. Did a clean install of Windows though. For some reason, the beta version of Live messenger crashed the OS every time I opened it. Seems to run quick although it takes about twice as long to boot as Snow Leopard. Overall I still like OS X better, but there are a few annoying bugs I hope Apple fixes soon.
The main reason I boot to Windows, besides checking my sites in Explorer is for the games: [ski.ihoc.net]
"Windows 7? You guys are totally biased and can't get enough of MS. It totally blows. You reek of Bill Gates' man juice. Gosh!
"Wait? What? A Snow Leopard guide too?

Wah fucking wah, boo fucking hoo. Thanks for posting these guides, Giz. I'd like to say it quelled some of the babies who frequent the site, but from looking at the comments people still get their panties in a bunch over the absolutely most trivial shit ever. However, I suppose these rivalries will always exist.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to Jalopnik to explain why Chevy is better than Ford.
So I'm thinking about installing a Windows OS on my Macbook via bootcamp, and am wondering weather to take the Win7 plunge. Anyone have any recommendations as to weather I should pick up a copy of XP or go to Win7?
@Daniel Rosenthal: I clean installed both Snow Leopard and Win7 and aside from a long boot up time from Win7, they're both running quite nicely. As long as you have 2 GB of RAM you should be fine and Win7 is definitely what Vista should have been. It feels great, especially with all the macbook drivers allowing two finger right clicking and scrolling.
@Tiger-Fever:
I've got Win7 running on my eee 900a with 1GB of ram. No problems. It's crazy smooth and very perky.
So, (granted 2 wouldn't hurt) IMO even with only 1GB ram, Win7 runs fine.
(My only issue is that the small screen size means some (non-re-sizable) windows end up off the screen (including their OK/Cancel buttons).
Our Uni has Win7 pro up and as soon as I get a new HDD I'm upgrading ( Woot!)
I used the beta and thought it was fantastic, however I had one major gripe and that was that any folders, shortcuts, my computer etc all got bundled in the Explorer jump list thing. Is there a way to separate them yet?
I currently use Object Dock on my second screen so I guess it won't be too much trouble, but it could start to get annoying having to use object dock as my main taskbar.
@Wicked1: Chances are you won't need two licenses to install 7 on two computers. I've installed the same copy of Vista on three different machines now, twice on two of them, and haven't had any problems.
Phenomenal review.... but ive been wondering, what do us users with build 7600 as our only OS do?? Can I upgrade, or does it have to be a Custom install?
@robot-shmobot: The general steps (as I understand them) is alpha, beta, release candidate, gold master, final.
Alpha is highly buggy and generally unstable. Beta is largely stable but buggy. Release Candidate is highly stable and largely debugged. Gold Master is highly stable and almost ready to ship barring any major bugs. Final is what ships. There's usually little to no difference between gold master and final. People aren't updating because they are lazy, prone to whining, and short-sighted.
It's akin to saying "I'm used to driving this car that is 90% painted and sometimes stalls and therefore don't feel like getting a replacement car identical to it that is 95% painted which doesn't stall."

From the RC: Run Regedit
Navigate to HKLM(HKEY_Local_Machine)Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion
Change EditionID from "Ultimate" to your version (Professional in my case)
and Change ProductName from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 7 [youreditionhere] (IE: Windows 7 Professional)
Close Regedit and after doing the cversion.ini trick above you will be able to upgrade.
Worked fine on my RC to Professional Upgrade...just took about an hour.
