I no longer believe any "official" release date from Microsoft. I read somewhere that it was 2010, then I read it was summer, then I read it was October, then then then then then.
This obscure timetable for release will make it hard for a lot of people to decide what to buy. If they can't get a trustworthy release date, they may just get something else if time is of the essence (such as the kid leaving for college but needs a computer to bring). I know that one could just use any other XP, Vista or Mac (or Ubuntu lolz) option, but that just means another lost sale for 7.
@OMG! Ponies!: not to flame you or anything...but this is less of a defense and more of an attack. Not an unjustified one, but still not truly a defense.
@OMG! Ponies!: Dude - using *Engadget* speculating on a shipping date as a reference is like asking a hooker for advice on STDs.
The only *official* date is one Microsoft announces. And this is the only *official* date they've ever announced. All the other ones were unofficial - mostly by salesmen (and come on - you must live in this same universe we do - salesmen say ANYTHING to get a sale, so you don't use them as reputable sources).
This is how the Vista fiasco really started. Microsoft never gave firm dates. Yet the techblogs kept trying to guess when it would ship. Vista wasn't actually late - the blogs were all wrong.
@TheWerewolf: It was also cited as an internal Microsoft date. This has been a steady creep, from one quarter to the next.
And it's a shame because Windows 7 is such a robust OS right now.
Let's just hope that this doesn't reach the level of "PlayStation 3 fiasco." If Microsoft can keep Ballmer from saying that the next generation of operating systems doesn't start until Microsoft says it does, they should be safe.
Not suprising at all... The RC1 releasse is extremely stable with the exception of SLEEP. My damn computer doesn't seem to stay asleep for longer then 2 minutes. :(
@Log1c: Oh I have no allusions about that - that's why I don't want to buy a new laptop (current one is approaching 3 years old) and then have to separately buy Windows 7 a couple months later.

June was the original aim date because it covers graduation and back-to-school.
