To me that looks like it's just about perfect, with the only downsides being that it runs a hobbled OS and that the screen is not multitouch. I'd definitely consider one for surfing around the house and as a home entertainment device (mostly audio) especially if it had HDMI out. $500 is pricey considering where netbooks have dropped these days, but not too bad in the scheme of things.
Holy crap. How did this turn into an Apple thread? This is an Archos product! Read it for what it is, a new interesting gadget.
Why does every damn PMP, Tablet (now), and laptop thread have to turn into "my Apple/Windows/Linux/Unix computer is better than all others and you are retarded for thinking otherwise?"
@OMG! Homies!: Correct, this makes sense since Microsoft does not want people buying the Stater edition (that will be priced to compete with Linux) to run on their home PC's. Still, there is something about Microsoft removing/blocking features in their OS to justify the price that just seems, well - wrong.
So if you get starter pre-installed how much will it be to upgrade to the next notch up? If they make it reasonable (<$30) they'll will have a lot of upgraders.
@OMG! Horny!: I think the last time I saw a Microsoft software product for less than thirty bucks was an upgrade to MS-DOS 2.0, ignoring when they give their software away for free to create a new monopoly (and then subsequently raise the price to astronomical levels after they captured the market). But, your logic is sound, regardless of the odds of it happening.
The notebook I installed Win7 on came with Vista Home Basic, and man, it sucked. Aero is fantastic on 7, and runs great on craptastic hardware (Acer Aspire 3690). Odds are anyone who gets this crippled Win7 release will find ways around all of its limitations...
No Aero? That one went straight to my heart, Microsoft.
Seriously, though - do people who use Windows actually change sounds and colors? I thought they all were like John Hodgman and were happy with what God Gates gives 'em.
I agree wholeheartedly. You're trying to sell a consumer on an OS but then telling him that he can't use that picture of his wife and kids as his background image? That's just annoyingly petty and stupid. It feels almost... vindictive. I mean, after all, this is what the Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage tool does when it discovers you're using a pirated copy of Windows XP. But Microsoft also wants it to be the behavior of their entry level OS. They're treating their netbook users no differently from pirates, if you think about it.
Maybe this is just collusion between Microsoft and the Netbook manufacturers in an attempt to kill-off the less profitable netbook sector.
I'd love it if Windows 7 were the OS that finally made Linux a contender in the market place.

Not sure I like the keyboard though. Maybe a natural version of it would have been better for this application.

YOU WILL NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE THIS VERSION. NEVER. IT WILL NEVER BE SOLD IN A "DEVELOPED" COUNTRY, EVER!

And it will be forced on people who think that posting all-caps posts is ever a good idea.
