Thank you all for clarifying. : )

The reason for my misunderstanding is because I am getting OEM upgrades for the systems that I purchased this year, and as such, the manufacturers are sending me fresh copies.

Again, thank you all for the clarity on this matter : ) #windows7studentedition

@David Han: The problem is that if you didn't pay, it would (currently) be good for only 30 days, since you need an activation key to unlock it past that date. #windows7studentedition

@tyler12345: From what I understand, the answer I believe is "no", since the Win7 upgrades are intended for Vista to 7 Upgrades.

XP users would require a full version, along with a fresh install. #windows7studentedition

@Soldier_CLE: no you can use this to upgrade XP. You just have to do a clean install, but you only have to pay the $30 for a key. #windows7studentedition

As a few others have been saying, the download seems to fail at or around the 20mb mark. I've tried several times now and it's consistent. #windows7studentedition

is the link to the ISO above for home premium or professional? the student deal actually allowed for purchase of either version, so shouldn't there be more than one ISO link? #windows7studentedition

@Scott Morrison: Likely, if this is like the retail release, the disc is the same for both versions. It's the key that's entered that determines which version gets installed. #windows7studentedition

@HeartBurnKid: You're asked for the key after installation instead of before, so I don't think they are simply interchangeable.

@AlphaTeam: Actually, you are asked for the key during installation, but you can skip it until later if you wish. If you skip the key, you have to manually choose which version you're installing. #windows7studentedition

You know.. If half the company's putting stuff out on the market would test this crap a little longer in beta.. Crap like this might be found out.. But Noooooo.. all they see is profit.. We'll fix it later.. F2ckers.. You know, it's no wonder this once great country is going down the tubes.. Can't see past their damn wallets...

@Uncletwitch: Some leading economists also point to wasteful use of extraneous periods as a contributing factor to our downfall.

Sorry. If it makes you feel better, I do agree re: beta testing. #windows7

it's worth noting that, for an additional 13 dollars, you can opt to have them send you physical disks instead of just getting a download. 43 dollars still ain't bad. #windows7

The problem is that 32bit and 64bit are different architectures. You can't just switch freely between the two. Why would anyone get a 64bit UPGRADE if they have 32bit to start off with?

    It's not Microsoft's fault. #windows7

@meow-mixer: Simple: because some of us intend to upgrade our PC's in the future to include more than 3GB of RAM. Right now, my desktop has 4GB and a 1GB videocard, meaning 1GB of RAM is essential worthless.

Anyways, I bought Win7 Student Edition because it was cheap and I wanted a backup. Proves exactly why everything that looks too good to be true probably is.

And FYI, I was using the Win7 RC1, completely formatted my drive and it still wouldn't boot. So no, it isn't my fault...it's all Microsoft's fault. #windows7

@meow-mixer: On the student-purchase site, Microsoft specifically states that with a clean install, you can upgrade from 32-bit Vista/XP to 64-bit 7 -- so I think it should be a safe assumption that they would make an effort to not maximize the hassle that goes into this process. #windows7

I hope Mac fanboys don't get too annoying over this. The problem is specifically for 32-bit users trying to upgrade to 64-bit. #windows7
