I'll be the last person to speak ill of illegal downloading, lest I be a total hypocrite - But for something like your operating system, just put down the money and buy it. I think the stability and support of an actual copy is probably worth a little money in that case.
@diverguy: Personally, I've found that pirating is a function of age. When I was in high school and college, I had very little money and pirated just about anything I could get my hands on. Currently, the annoyances of pirated software (cracking, registry changes, WGA notifications etc) are enough for me to just buy it legally especially since I now have the money in most cases.
@diverguy: You indeed will and deserve to be flamed, peddling your pitiful notions of proper patronage to purveyors of popular products. If only I knew where my slapping glove was.
@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: Yeah, I totally agree. I have to admit my bootlegging activities have decreased exponentially with my age.
However, if you need software for professional reasons and you don't have the cake to by it... Pirate that junk! Later on when you get established you'll become a paying customer... it's kind of a loyal customer/pirate thing.
@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: I'd call that a function of money moreso than age, but you're point is valid.
Though they don't come out with it, Adobe is generally unofficially ok with youngsters pirating their software because a teenage pirating Photoshop is hardly a lost sale (where are most teenagers gonna get thousands of dollars for software?), and they've got a hooked customer when they get older.
I have a feeling a production company that has the money for it would be a little bit more bothersome to Adobe.
@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: I agree. as my better half has graduated and we actually have money for budgeting, I can afford to pay for what I would otherwise steal.
@FurySamurai72: Certaintly, sir, you cease to speak sensibly. Can Kaiser be counted cogent for his cantakerous clichés? Tenderly turning terms doth not truth tell.
@D.E.P.C. is on a Sexpedition: i disagree, obviously kaiser deliberately sought to flame this individual for the good of pirate kind. selflessly risking flaming from honest product purchasing people of the non-pirate persuasion.
There's no reason that Home Premium, Pro, Enterprise, and Ultimate can't just be one fucking version, with enterprise pricing for businesses (which is all MS cares about anyway).
Some businesses may use the entertainment features and some home users may want the businesses features. Those that don't want their employees to have the entertainment features can strip them out, and people who don't need the business features will just not use them.
Oh come on. Stop that "better get OS X" or "it's gonna cost a fortune" shit.
7 improved on a damn alot of things. Why should MS stop improving when it comes to price? They sure know many people gained interest in 7, so they also have to make good prices for the customers to actually buy it.
And goddammit, the price isn't even announced...seriously...
No, this is definitely retarded. Microsoft should sell Win7 as a single package for a single low price ($99 new / $49 upgrade) and have a control option to show/hide feature centers that users do/don't want.
For example, if I'm a home user, I should have an option to hide all of the checkboxes and tabs and windows and menus for enterprise-centric features to streamline and simplify my interface. Similarly, enterprise users should have their own option to hide all the home user junk. Ultimate power users can just turn everything on. N00bz can continue using a Mac.
It's hardly trolling, and I've got to agree with the guy. I own both a PC and a Mac, and I really like how Apple offers just one OS. Easy to buy, easy to think about. I think it's silly to have 7 different versions of one OS myself.
@KhaiJB: tsk tsk, Kjai -- inappropriate use of apostrophe: 10 comment penalty.
No matter how much any one of you may hate what you perceive to be fanboi-hood, the REALITY is, if an article is discussing the relative merits of seven different iterations of a single OS, it might bear commenting that at least one vendor follows a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STRATEGY, one that seems satisfactory to many users.
Linux users should be allowed to post because, although they face a dizzying array of choices, as well, the pricing structure for said choices remains the same.
You anti-mac people are like Republicans: you automatically, knee-jerk label anyone a fanboi (or socialist during the last election cycle) whether it applies or not.
To steal a line, "you keep on using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

I am not anti mac. I'm anti 'saying the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over an over again'
we got it at the 400th time it was said. it's just that simple and go be a grammar nazi somewhere else as well. again something which is so overused it's annoying.
Sadly, I've seen many frightening and horrifying sights in my day. But none in recent memory are as disturbing as the main photo montage of this story.
@bosskev: I am saving that montage for a yet undecided purpose. Its something I know I can use some day, I just dont know what for yet. (Maybe a copy on my trash cans will keep the dogs out it, etc.)
"While they didn't come out and say it directly that XP would require a full retail package, Microsoft said that, as in the Windows 7 beta, Windows XP will require a clean install and "that will be reflected with the packaging.""

stealing is the second oldest job in the world. Since someone had to had a job and get cool things to steel in the first place.
Even if Microsoft would release a 20$ windows 7 licence, it would still be hacked or cracked or whatever.
They know, we know. We know they know and they know we know.
So we just all go along with it!
In the end, most of us will end up buying a new pc within the next 2 years and therefore pay for windows anyways!
what was that post about again?

Not cheap as in Happy Meal cheap, but cheap as in software cheap. An xbox360 game retails at $60. Most pc games are $40-50.

Windows XP Media Center Edition -> Windows 7 Home Premium, $105
