Hmmm... much delayed Microsoft OS update turns out to be underwhelming at best and an irritating step backwards at worst. Why does that sound familiar?
You do realize this a .4 update to 6.1 right? It was not supposed to be a gigantic upgrade, 7 is going to be the major overhaul your wanting...
I agree though, its not really worth it to buy a new phone. But if you can snag a decent custom 6.5 Rom off xda-developers for your current phone, then there really is no reason to not update.
Not to mention the 6.5 found on handsets now is indeed a beta build rushed to new handsets and there are newer beta builds out with much better layouts not found on earlier 6.5 builds.
He's not an idiot. The review is extremely biased. Anything good that the reviewer must admit about 6.5 is quickly followed by some rude phrase about how much he still hates it. Some of his complaints are actually about features that no other OS even has. The reviewer, despite supposedly having experience in this field, has overlooked an important point, that this is a mild upgrade to 6.1, hence the name. Many of his complaints focus on items that cannot be changed in such a small upgrade as this. I'm not a fan of WinMo, but I felt like I was reading a review written by a bratty child at times. I do have experience with 6.1 devices, Blackberrys, and the iPhone and I can say that 6.1 does provide a similar experience to all those when it comes to common user needs. I can send and receive email perfectly, edit Office documents, browse the web (with 3rd party browser), listen to music (via any one of a thousand media apps), get directions, get news, etc, etc. Microsoft just made it easierto do those things with a more touch friendly interface and capactive screen support. If pretty menus are really that important to you then buy a phone with TouchFlo or any of the other UI's available for WinMo.
Somewhere along the line Microsoft decided to evolve Windows CE into Windows Mobile and assume that mobile phone functionality could just be built-in.
Here's the flat truth: The desire for backwards compatibility and penchant for code re-factoring & supplementing (without *replacing*) has lead Microsoft down a long line of bloated, slow-to-evolve, bug-ridden and code-heavy operating systems.
Windows Mobile suffers the same fate. Why, could they not, since I first purchased my Casio Cassiopeia E115 in 1998, completely scrap their code-base and develop an entirely new architecture? It's not like I could even upgrade my Samsung SCH-i730 from just a few years ago without flashing the ROM (that's assuming the manufacturer custom-coded the upgrade) to even take advantage of a compatible upgrade. Windows Mobile has forced essentially non-backwards compatible upgrades on us for years without ever actually being rearchitected to compete with its quickly evolving and improving competitors. For years ago, the big news was something like "New MS Mobile OS out soon - Who will get the ROM upgrade?" Only a precious few!
How can MS be so ridden with compromises and paradoxes? It's a victim of it's perception that all software development at every level is engineering instead of recognizing it is also a craft which requires truly motivated and inspired programmers to drive innovation. They hit it with the 360, and maybe the ZuneHD and possibly Windows 7, but they have definitely missed on Windows Mobile so far.
I'm very disappointed with giz's and engadget's reviews. Make it seem like they don't know what Windows Mobile is really about.
Of course we are waiting for 7, but 6.5 isn't that bad. The end of the reiew should read typed on an iphone.
@br4nd0n: To start off, you're an idiot for typing such a ridiculous thing, i just thought you should know that.
Second, do you somehow think you have used a larger variety of phones than any of those people? Do you really think they dont understand what windows mobile is about (whatever the hell cryptic bs that means) i assume you mean, like making a phone call or failing to surf the internet?
To have such hubris that you think you have more experience than guys who probably interact with 10-15 different smart phones a day, is not only ridiculous, but it screams of an uneducated fanboy just needing to put in his jab cause someone didnt like his poor lil smartphone os made by the biggest software company on the planet who can do nothing but band-aid their old failures and sell it to you.
I think the problem with this review is that you're comparing WinMo 6.5 to the iPhone all the time. Maybe not in plain text, but you can tell it's there between the lines. Why can't you just acknowledge that 6.5 is better than 6.1? WinMo never had to put up with this comparing-bs before, why start now?
@soul8o8: OK: Windows Mobile is better than 6.1, a little. But it's not competing against 6.1, it's competing against the iPhone, BlackBerrys, the Pre, Symbian phones and Android phones. Comparisons seem relevant, no?

@UltimateIdiot - Imperfection at Best: I always wondered about that, I used Me from release to about 2003. I only upgraded to XP because Me didn't support hyperthreading. I s'pose I had the occasional blue screen, but never had problems like everyone else. Seems like I got lucky.
@FuzzyHorror: You must have been lucky. I was charged with keeping my mother-in-laws computer in good order, and Windows ME made it almost impossible. The thing was buggy as hell.
The reason 6.5 sucks is because Microsoft sucks in general, never fully doing anything, and always finding ways to "upgrade" people...And people say Apple is bad! HA!
The next reason 6.5 sucks is Microsoft doesnt want to spend time on it when 7.0 is coming out in a few more months.
@rwalford79: Believe me when I say I'm still adjusting to saying this but....lately? Microsoft hasn't been doing too bad.
Windows 7 is a solid OS. I've been using it alongside my Snow Leopard lappy and frankly, I'm equally happy with both. The Xbox 360, while it suffered massive hardware failures at first, has cleaned its act up and become an extremely good gaming/multimedia machine. And the Zune HD? I still can't get over the fact that I say this but....I want that Zune.
Windows Mobile sucks. I mean, a lot. Frankly, it appears that they just lazily gave up on 6.5 since what they really want is 7.0. But to say that 6.5 sucks because Microsoft sucks is simplistic and ignorant.
It's seriously been a while since I said this, so it still feels weird, but honestly right now....Microsoft has some damn good products.
After reading the NYT piece on full-disclosure by bloggers, I remember why I do read this site. Whereas a blogger profiled by NYT said that if she doesn't like a product, she just doesn't review it, Giz gives good and bad reviews.
So while Kylie won't be touting John's words here, when she (and T-Mobile) do tout Gizmodo's opinion in their ads, it means something.
I had joked that I kind of like the 70's sci-fi look of the hexagon/honeycomb grid overlay but looking at it now, it really is a mess. Sad really as I think of Microsoft as the Skynet of tech companies - it learns from its successes and failures (and its competitors). Which is why the XBox 360, Microsoft's second console, is such strong competition to the PS3.
Microsoft has been doing Windows CE/Mobile for years. If it can't compete with the iPhone, Android, RIM, or even the Pre, then the Mobile Division needs to be shut down.
Just because Bill Gates gives to charity doesn't mean that he needs Microsoft to take that tack with its divisions.
@OMG! Ponies!: I was really looking forward to the heckagon/honeycomb grid too. I though it could work really well for an OS interface being both pretty and a good use of space. And I can't put my finger on it exactly, I think it has something to do with the text underneath the apps, but it looks like an absolute mess.
@blublub: The only problem with that is the only people who've ever even heard of it are the people commenting on this thread.... I hate to say it, cause the N900 is just pure sex, but Maemo is a lost cause.
tbh, reading a review for anything winmo on gizmodo, thats like reading a review for winmo on macrumours or apple forums.
It bothers me that this review is released before the launch today, I just don't think this is an honest move.
I'm currently waiting for my Samsung Omnia 2 phone and can't wait to install any application I want on it, use real GPS software on the gorgeous 3.7" AMOLED, full office mobile suite, good 5MP camera with dual LED flash and every other feature I need.
I bought this phone to use it, not to play with menus all day.
@Beastage: Well I don't have a Jesus Phone, and I agree 100% with the review. After flashing back and forth between 6.1 and 6.5preview roms, 6.5 just isn't worth it.
@Beastage: If John was sent a phone for testing and reviewing, shouldn't he review it? Shouldn't he review it honestly?
Put another way, is it fair that a bad review of a movie gets printed in the paper and read over morning coffee, 12 hours before people are likely to see the movie?
Not only is that an honest move, it is more honest than sitting on a bad review for several weeks so that some people buy the bad product or, in the case of the blogger profiled in the NYT article, not posting a bad review at all.
Forget what your mother told you. If you can't say anything nice about a product, that's okay. Say the mean things but explain why.
Used to work in WinMo. There are several things that is holding WinMo back from moving forward. First, they hire people that are totally unqualified to build or support things. They have ( and I swear this is not bitterness or an overstatment ) a ton of people that are devs, that don't even know what a SIM card is, where it goes, or how to even configure Exchange or data settings on the devices. Second, ( again, pure fact ) there is a level of arrogance, that WinMo is the best and makes the best. I can appreciate being loyal to the company you work for, but being humbled and acknowledging shortcomings, is the key to moving forward. You have devs and marketing folks talking smack on every OS out there, even though a lot of people at MS, use iPhones. Even the computer monitors the devs create the UIs on are Apple. :) I have seen some internal build of WM7 from back in the day and they have truly come a long way. The sad thing is ( and I signed some stuff saying I wouldn't talk about certain aspects, so I'll keep it vague ) a lot of the "cool" features to be included are already in the iPhone and Palm Pre. Top it off about recent comments that devs should set the price on apps, made by someone in WinMo is a joke. I can get the same app on an iPhone that is sold in a competing app store and the iPhone app is not only cheaper, but works better and looks better. We the consumers have pushed for the 99 cent price, by what we choose to buy. So if the same app is in two stores, which will you buy? Hmmm. While I'm at it, why the hell did all these people on Giz and other sites bitch about the PS3 being expensive, when it includes wi-fi without a $100 adaptor, no $60 online fee and includes blu-ray. Seriously, same price as the Elite out the door, and far superior in build quality and lack of paying for add-ons. MS is arrogant and really WinMo is all about selling Exchange slots. That's where the money is for them, in WinMo at least. In all fairness, I think RIM has dropped the ball too. Why any consumer would want a BlackBerry is beyond me. Browser is poo!
@annefrank: I just approved your earlier comment. And now, I'm going to have to sadly use you in a PSA.

That being said, it's too bad WinMo is on the way out. Another good mobile OS is always good for competition. I'm sure we can all agree that none of the existing OS's are perfect, but having one that adds a feature the others don't currently have (in this case, being able to install whatever software you damned well please) and doesn't totally suck pushes other OS's to pick those features up. (App Store, anyone?)
@PorkPie: Actually, it's not really a club. Think of it this way:
The redbox period is what the "audition" used to be. There's a ton of readers of this site and, if every random comment got posted, there would be a lot of trash. The new system got rid of firsting and blending. And, it weeds out the slurs and junky "ur a buncha fanboy" comments.
After a while, when the redboxer has a pattern of not doing crap like yelling first or dropping N-bombs, they get approved.
While in the redbox phase, every Star and Staffer can see the comment. As I said, usually, if it's remotely funny or on point, I approve it.
As to the Star Club myth, the starring started when Gawker implemented the follower system. After you'd reach a certain number of followers, you get a star. Also, Stars can nominate others for starring. I've done that about a dozen times in the last couple of months.
My criteria for nominating is simple: be consistently funny or relevant and don't insult people (with certain exceptions)

Given that the iPhone was launched in 07, and MS have had years to develop a new phone OS, you have to conclude that they just haven't bothered.
In the same timeframe we've seen Android get developed from scratch, and even Meizu have managed to get products to market!
