The company claims the wood construction gives the earphones superior sound quality, in addition to superior style.

While the original cans went for nearly $800, the JVC HA-FX700 will come with a $330 price tag. Though the price is steep, you're paying for undeniably pretty earphones, purportedly high sound quality, and a lot of little parts:

The JVC HA-FX700 will be available in Japan in February and likely obtainable through your preferred Japanese electronics importer. [CrunchGear]

<![CDATA[Wooden Automata iPhone Dock Cranks From Vertical to Horizontal]]> This Automata iPhone Dock by Murtaza Lakdawala is clever and useful, a combination rarely found in DIY projects. All you have to do is crank and the dock turns from vertical to horizontal.

Just like in cars, the next evolution is to eliminate the crank and have an automatic version. Preferably one that you can push down on once and it'll crank all the way, but that can also turn slowly when you hold it down, for a more dramatic rotation. [Freewebs]

<![CDATA[iPod Speaker Purse Is the Cute Way to Blare Tunes in Public Places]]> Artist Yoshihiko Satoh's wooden speaker purse is actually pretty good-looking: It looks like speakers, not fabric, yet the size and design work as a purse (or at least an iPod carrier). It's expensive at $340, natch. [Boing Boing Gadgets]

<![CDATA["Apple Netbook" Student Project Is a Pencil-Drawn Beauty]]> This little project has been making the rounds as the "new Apple netbook," which, unfortunately, is way off. But the truth is pretty cool anyway: It's a beautiful pencil-drawn, wooden model.

Student Kyle Buckner made this 3/4 scale model out of wood, with real working hinges and everything, and hand-drew the Dock, icons, keyboard, trackpad, and even the little Philips screws on with a pencil. It also features a magnetically-attached "screen" that has a pull-tab underneath. When pulled, the tab shows a very cool film strip drawing with illustrations of the wonders of Mac. Check out the gallery below for more shots. [Kyle Buckner, thanks Kyle!]

<![CDATA[This 16GB Mahjong USB Drive Costs $550?!]]> If you thought the Chinese were going to undercut cheap Japanese USB drives with even cheaper versions, you've been drinking too much contaminated powered milk. These Mahjong drives are custom-engraved with three letters, such as the character on Mahjong pieces, your name or whatever dirty phrase you can come up with. They're also $490 for an 8GB version and $550 for the 16GB version. If that's slightly extravagant, you can go for the darker wood, which knocks $100 off both those units. But c'mon, aren't we a nation that drives gold-plated Cadillacs? I think we can spare $500 for a USB drive. [Bronon via Everything USB via Boing Boing Gadgets]

<![CDATA[Wooden Art Deco Old-Tyme Clock Casemod]]> The world's number one consumer of wood for casemods, Jeffrey Stephenson, has created another machine called the Pico Bayard. It's got a 1GHz Via C7 CPU, an 8-inch EarthLCD touchscreen LCD on the front, 1GB Crucial DDR2 memory, and integrated Wi-Fi.

The most important part is how this guy looks, and it looks great with flame mahogany and chrome accents. It looks like an old clock, but it's inspired by French clockmaker Bayard and takes art deco cues as well. Definitely another classy addition to Jeffrey's wooden stable. [Jeffrey Stephenson]

<![CDATA[Guy Creates Wooden Sidekick 3 For Girlfriend]]> Handmade Christmas gifts are the best, and this hand-carved wooden Sidekick 3 will definitely make this guy's girlfriend happy. Happy, that is, until she reads his forum post on Something Awful that says he didn't make the thing slide because "she's not THAT special." Oh you!

<![CDATA[Amazing Wooden Supercar Makes Burning Rubber Even More Dangerous]]> We've seen wooden cars before, but they've never looked quite as awesome as this supercar one-off that a team of graduate students is building. Named Splinter, the supercar is being constructed as a serious attempt to explore the uses of wood as a bulding material for vehicles, so it's even loaded with a supercharged 600-hp V8 engine that should really give it a roar. More info and photo gallery after the jump.

A group of students from North Carolina State University, led by industrial design student Joe Harmon, are building Splinter as part of a thesis project. Harmon and his car dons intend to look at how to work with wood in car designs, so Splinter even has wooden components in its suspension and chassis.

Crafting a car like this has required them to come up with some innovative uses of laminated wood—the wheels are made of carefully cut and layered oak veneers strong enough to take the stress of a 2,500-pound body—that's as heavy as two Smart cars. And how do you stop the heat from its powerful mid-located V8 from setting fire to the body? Turn parts of it upside down so the exhaust vents over the top of the engine, and incorporate the muffler into the rear wing, where it can also aid downforce.

Inside the car the passengers' legs go between the arms of the suspension, which sounds kinda dangerous, but clearly the team has thought long and hard about it. They want project Splinter to "explore materials, learn, share ideas and stimulate creativity." And go bloody fast. [Winding Road via Autoblog]

<![CDATA[Wooden Car Is a Schizophrenic Masterpiece]]> This wooden car is the product of a Ukrainian man's dream, pursued after he quit his job and sold two cars to fund the construction. One half modern and one half vintage, the gorgeous oak detailing is built upon a 1981 Opel with 100 horsepower. We're not sure if it's more beautiful than the Tryane II woodenmobile, but we love the split personality nature of this latest creation. As do we. [spluch via core77]

<![CDATA[Wooden Keyboard Obligates a "Having Wood" Joke]]> We have already declared our love for wooden keyboards, but Geeks.com's offering has stolen our hearts without defiling our wallets. At only $20 for a mouse and keyboard, made from the original hard stuff, we are not too sure what more you could ask of the fine people at Geeks.com, nay, of life. Though the product description seems a little misleading, with the entry of "wood colored keys," the chaps at Wired are seeking the real down-low as we speak. We can only wait with bated breath as the news comes in. We pray for real wood...nightly...we have problems. [Product Page via Wired]

<![CDATA[Wooden Midget Guitar and HDMI Cable for Non-Elites Coming to Xbox 360]]> Team Xtender just made an announcement today about two products coming in the next two months. The first is a half-sized Guitar Hero guitar that's made out of wood and sized for midgets. They claim that it will be easier to carry around, but you're not playing actual gigs with that thing.

The second is a HDMI cable for the original Xbox 360 (the non-elite version) that supports up to 1080i resolution. Sounds like it's not really going to give you the benefits of HDMI other than the fact that you save either a VGA or a component input on your TV. Look for these in the coming two months.

<![CDATA[Hulger's Ziricote Wooden Phone]]> Not as ghetto as the big Wooden Scony cellphones found in Mozambique, these HULGER phones are actually made of wood as a luxury thing. Constructed out of African Ziricote hardwood, which is usually used for decorative objects, the phone has its own wooden box and comes with a case of wax so you can wax your phone. That's not a euphemism folks.

Fortunately, this is only one of a kind and available for £2000 ($3885) from the Digital Wellbeing Showroom or direct from HULGER.

<![CDATA[Big Wooden Cellphones]]>

Here are some hot new phones fresh off the streets of Pemba, Mozambique. Hopefully we don't get anyone sued for use of the "Scony" branding.

With no interior electronics, the carver could have easily created a clamshell or ultra thin candybar. What do we get instead? A monstrous Zack Morris phone...in magenta.
