    Before you start laughing about them being a supermarket and not in competition with Apple, perhaps you ought to do some Due Diligence (as I'm sure Apple's legal eagles did...) and read this Wikipedia entry.

    Both their history as a variety store and their ownership of the Dick Smith Electronics subsidiary make an objection necessary - and they have a history of appropriating the names/trademarks of others.

    Apple MUST act to maintain their right to the trademark, and Woolworth, since they DO sell consumer electronics, should have known better.

    Like it or not, it's pretty clear Apple is in the right here.

    @Synthfilker: Apple has the right to a very specific apple logo, not every apple logo. This W in the shape of an apple hardly qualifies as trademark infringement.

    @Barion: Take away the leaf, and all you have is a curved W without a leaf. Apple is suing a supermarket for using the 23rd letter of the alphabet as their logo.

    @Synthfilker: I wouldn't go so far as to say that "it's pretty clear Apple is in the right here," but I would say that Apple is pretty much obligated to give it a shot because of Federal trademark laws which put the burden on the owner of a trademark to do stuff like this. If Apple didn't do this, it could (albeit perhaps tenuously) lead to brand dilution, like Xerox(r) and Band-Aid(r).

    @Signore Pinko-Panko!: The only company "in the right" is Apple records, who allowed Apple computers to use the name Apple so long as they never entered the music industry. Oops.

    Apple records should be handed iTunes.

IT'S A FREAKING APPLE. or were you not able to make that connection? but i suppose you think they just go around suing companies with any type of fruit logo, like a banana? wait, they haven't. only apple's. how odd. not that i think it's a valid complaint..

    @bigfatduck: I think that everyone knew the fruit in question would be an apple. The only stated it that way to emphasize how ridiculous it is that a company would think they have the right to be the only company that uses a certain kind of fruit in their logo.

    what kind of retarded lawyer thinks these logos look similar enough to be a trademark violation?

    As far as I know a trademark only protects you fron someone using the same/similar name or image, the woolworths logo work is completly different than apples. I don't think anyone would ever have trouble diferentiating both brands from each other.

    This is beyond retarded. I'm starting to see Apple as a big cry baby company. Besides, that is a damn "W" which is shaped to look like a fruit. It has everything to do with food. Unlike the Apple logo which has nothing to do with computers. This just ruined the image I had of Apple.

    I think I much rather support MS, who have donated boatloads of its money to certain organizations, and aren't going around suing window installers or charging people for looking out their windows. Sure MS had a rough period, but it's gaining back it's place in the computing world.

    My two cents. I don't need any fanboys bashing on me for my comments. Thanks.

    @puhsitch: Yeah I suppose that is true, but we all know it's never going to happen. Besides, Apple was in the computer field first, so I think they could've just waited until Woolyfoody there would try to board the silicon ship, and then file lawsuit. That in my opinion is more logical, then just randomly picking on companies with an apple as a logo.
