The catch is that it's a refurb, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, except that it only comes with a limited 60-day warranty, which isn't quite as hardcore as what Apple offers on refurbs. <![CDATA[ W00t Wins Webster's Word of the Year, Just Edges Out the Verb Facebook ]]> W00t, that expression of joy invented by gamers way back when Sonic and Tails were special friends, has been given the accolade of word of the year by Webster's dictionary. The word, which beat the verb "to facebook" has an uncertain providence: while some people think it is an acronym for "We own the other team", others believe it is a mere exhortation of joy, like "Yippee" or, as we say in my crib, "Huzzarahrah." My reaction is after the jump.

meh.jpg
In a move of supreme populism, Websters invited people to vote online for a shortlist of 20 words, and it woz w00t wot won it. This was their official statement.

It's like saying "yay." It could be after a triumph or for no reason at all,"

Well come on, people, you could try a little harder than that sniffy little statement—after all, you are in charge of the book which defines every single word in the american language. [Yahoo! News] ]]>

A Wootoff is when they chain up these sales consecutively until everything's sold out. And if you're lucky and watch the Woot page when a bag 'o crap comes up, you get a chance to get 3 random items for $1 a piece. They can be calendars, MP3 players, or even (for a handful of people) a large DLP TV. Get to Wooting!

<![CDATA[ Dare to Compare: DVD Players, One is $40, the Other, $3486 ]]> Looking for Dealzmodos as we always do, we found a Toshiba upconverting DVD player on Woot for $39.99. It's refurbished, has HDMI out and up-converts to progressive-scan 720p or 1080i. Best of all, it plays DivX and all kinds of CDs, too.

But in this corner, we're enticed with the Arcam FMJ DV139, the highest of high-end DVD players that scales video up to 1080p, boasts state-of-the-art broadcast quality upscaling technology from Anchor Bay, also has HDMI output, but whose main difference is its price conceit, commanding $3486. No DivX playback, either. WTF?

In a world where few people can tell the difference between 1080p and 720p, this reaches our breaking point of patience. Even the highest-end broadcast quality upscaling devices still don't look like HDTV, even to untrained eyes.

The fact that somebody would buy a DVD player for $3486 is to us certain proof that there is indeed a sucker born every minute. Reminds ous of those people who said they could hear the difference when a different mat was placed under their records on their turntables. Discuss.

<![CDATA[ Dealzmodo: Refurbished Samsung Q1 UMPC, $750 ]]> We've never really been on the whole Origami/UMPC bandwagon, but if you do happen to be on it, this deal ain't too shabby. For today only Woot.com is featuring the Samsung Q1 UMPC for $750. It is refurbished, but that is just another way of saying it has received extra care. New Q1 models retail for well over $1,100.

For a quick refresher, the Q1 is a UMPC with a 900MHz Celeron Mobile process, 512MB of ram, 40GB hard drive, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 7-inch touchscreen. Check out all of our coverage of the Q1 here.
