Standing in at 9.5mm tall, the M6 will easily fit most existing laptop hard drive bays. For those of you worried about sloth-like performance, the Spinpoint M6 has a 5400rpm spindle speed, an 8MB cache, as well as a 3.0Gbps SATA interface. A Free-Fall Sensor can be added as an optional extra. Not content with breaking the world record for the HDD with the smallest size/biggest capacity, Samsung is also introducing the industry's fastest DVD burner.

The WriteMaster SH-S223 will offer high-speed DVD burning on low speed media; 16X and 8X media will be written to at 22X and 12X write speeds, respectively. The SH-S223 will be able to write at the following maximum speeds; 22X DVD±R recording, 12X DVD-RAM recording, 16X DVD+R Dual Layer recording, 12X DVD-R Dual Layer recording, 8X DVD+RW recording and 6X DVD-RW recording. Time wise, 4.7GB of data can be burned to a DVD±R disc in approximately 4 minutes and 26 seconds. That kind of performance puts even Speedy Gonzalez to shame. All around, it looks like it has been a fantastic record-breaking weekend for our chums at Samsung. Well done, chaps. [Gizmag]

<![CDATA[Samsung Super-WriteMaster 18x DVD-Burner]]> Samsung's getting on the Superman-fever train with this Super-WriteMaster 18x burner with LightScribe technology. The only major difference between this and the standard 18x WriteMaster is, well, the LightScribe.

Other notable features on this are the "Firmware Live Update" that downloads and updates your firmware and the Automatic Ball Balancing system for unbalanced discs. Perfect for your American Idol compilation DVDs you're making of only the Ryan Seacrest scenes. Weirdo.

<![CDATA[Samsung WriteMaster SH-S182D 18x DVD Burner]]> Samsung's throws out the world's first 18x DVD writer—16x was the previous high—to the glee of impatient people worldwide. The WriteMaster can write standard DVDRs at 18x, DVD-RAM at 12x, DVD Dual Layer at 8x, DVD+RW at 8x and DVD-RW at 6x. With the Blu-ray and HD DVD burners up in the way-too-much range, a new DVD Burner should tide you over until the next-gen becomes the current-gen.

Available later this month for $69.99.

Update: We should have read the press release all the way through. The actual claim was "SAMSUNG BREAKS SPEED BARRIER WITH THE WORLD'S FIRST 18X REWRITABLE DVD DRIVE TO SUPPORT 12X DVD-RAM RECORDING". So they're the first 18x that also has 12x DVD-RAM support, not the first 18x overall.
