Pc Gaming rigs can be built cheaper than the consoles release date prices. Sure after a couple of years the price of a console drops but not quite so true for gaming rigs.
Secondly, Gaming rigs are not what they use to be as far as being outdated so quickly thanks to the dual and quad core pc's and mobos that have 4-12 gig ram capacity. For around $500, you could build a nice pc gaming system that would last for many years to come.
Pc games have just as many if not more "social" games. Second life, WoW, there also a lot of fps as well. I actually do have friends who still play tribes and claim it's alive and well with thousands of players still. As far as sitting in the same room with your friends and plaing on the same screen with your friends the console beats the pc hands down. But I'm 25, and most of my friends have kids so getting my buddies to come over and hang out is pretty much a joke.
Which brings me to my next point. Online gamers especially older ones like me have a hard time getting any friends to get a console or pc and game with them online. Most of us just meet new online buddies since they obviously like the same game(s) as you.
A good pc rig will run console games better faster with little to no load time and usually have better graphics. This is why some pc gamers wonder why people are still buying consoles,... because they happen to have a great machine that impresses them like no console ever has. For instance a game as trivial as gta san andreas, I remember on ps2 every time you went from one major city to the next, you had to wait thru a loading screen. The same game on pc never has to load the cities like that. Also I have had games minimized and maximized and running for weeks without them closing on me because I read some comment of that nature. As if consoles have not had their share of bugs anyhow (I'm looking at you xbox 360).
But ultimately consoles are naturally more widely bought and played because of convenience. Sometimes Pc gamers can get into a "pissing match" about who's got the better rig. With a console they are all equal. Also to have a good gaming rig, that requires technical knowledge of pc's and how they work and operate. You do not need to have any knowledge of how a ps3 works/operates in order to have a "good" one.
Secondly on consoles is they do have more games. But that is only because of my previous reason is why. they are more user friendly to that common person. A 12 year old or younger can operate a ps2/3 so therefore a company can sell more because there is a more broader appeal. basically if pc gamers outnumbered console gamers, more games would have been made for pc over consoles so that arguement holds no validity.
Thirdly, consoles are far cheaper than pc gaming rigs. Although you can build a cheap but good gaming rig, but with pc gamers your rig kind of represents how big your penis is and lets face it, nobody wants a little one. A used gaming console can be every bit as good as it was when it was new as the same can hardly ever be said about any pc. Not too mention screen size. If you want a good gaming pc monitor it's going to cost you.
Pc's do have a niche, and will never die. I switched from console to pc strictly because my school/work has me sitting in front of it most of the time anyway. I like having the convenience of having my music, movies, and games all in one place. But I also build and program for a hobby so I don't have the same fear of virus as others. I have owned a pc ever since I was 16 and have never had a problem with viruses. It's just common sense to not go to untrusted sites, or open email from anyone you don't know, and especially don't download anything from a stranger. File sharing is like having unprotected sex with multiple strangers. I don't like those odds.
As I promised to not be bi-partisan I'll leave you with this; There is no right or wrong answer unless the right answer is to have both (if affordable). I like some games on console better (although since they were never made on pc it's not like I got to compare anything) and then there are games on pc I prefer to play on the pc. So in other words, it's all subjectional. It's whatever you prefer. Both have pros and cons and different appeals to different types of people and that is what makes both great and the ability to last in the long term.
