Awesome everytime we see more of rachael I like it even more.
This really could be sony's chance to turn stuff around. moto and palm both brought some of their magic back let's see if sony can now.
Their problem is their distribution. None of their more impressive phones ever hit the carriers. I think if they could take something like this and get it on one or two of the major carriers they'd have something. If its still just off contract through sony direct they still lose. Could work out. Rumor at one point even had it hitting vzw. Though I doubt that would come to pass. #rachael
@pete: Really? Blackberry will be gone? Symbian will be gone? No fucking way. And I personally believe that even WinMo will still be around. Who knows, maybe WinMo7 will actually turn out to be usable. I think that Palm is the only one that is really in jeopardy. They might not be around. Or maybe they will. Maybe it gets a toe hold and sticks around. #rachael
@rrrrrrright: I don't think Symbian will be around that much longer - it is starting to be relegated to a never-never land between dumb phones and true smart phones. Blackberry will still be strong with the business crowd. #rachael
@rrrrrrright: Yes Symbian is in real jeopardy. Have you seen Nokia's numbers lately?
As far as Blackberry is concerned, they probably have a little more than two years, but not much if they don't get their act together (or MSoft buys RIM).
Their hardware and OS is seriously lagging behind. Executives want iPhones, that's a fact. If enterprise can eliminate the BlackBerry Enterprise Server from their costs, they will in a heartbeat. #rachael
@tande04: The video marquees "This is only conceptual" all over it. That means that this phone might or might not look anything like that vide. My guess is with 'might not'. #rachael
The phone looks exactly like that. So you can't be referring to the "will look nothing like that part". You must then be refering to the "won't work" part which is pretty weak when you base it off pre-production un-optimized software. Your whole argument is pretty much shot by the fact that sony wouldn't of announced if they didn't think they could deliver.
Nice try at an "I told you so" but you'll have to save your trolling until the phone is actually done. #rachael
@tande04: right... pre-production, unoptimized software that is due out next week.
Those super fast, fancy, real time, eye-candy animations won't happen. want proof? Look at the iPhone. Apple loves eye candy, and put it everywhere that it worked. And even it is pretty jumpy. Or the Palm Pre, same thing. Phone processors just don't have the processing power yet. #rachael
Giz does it again. Either these silly articles are posted because they will do anything for page views. or because they really have no idea what they are talking about? My guess...a little of both.
The Zune HD interface looks and performs like ass even though the Zune HD itself has very limited functionality. You would really not have to be paying attention to get a Zune HD instead of an iPod Touch. unless you like getting less for the same money.
Android needs work. Ok, if you are not on AT&T or just can't be on it for whatever reason then Android is probably your best choice right now but thats not saying much. Whats the competition? Blackberries and their archaic OS or Windows Mobile? Pfft.
One thing BB and Android have in common though is the inability to use more than 256MB of apps. Pretty unbelievable limitation in 2009. This means that a lot of the apps the iPhone has are simply not possible on Android. That plus App.OS.hardware fragmentation is a serious issue for Android.
The onscreen Android keyboard sucks. It's slow and the keys are too close together. So far all the Android phones with physical keyboards have lousy physical keyboards too and that includes the Droid.
The Droid at least has a faster proc than other Android phones but its still slow. Scrolling the home screen is laggy. For some reason they use the same proc as the iPhone but it is a 50mhz lower clock rate.
The Android Web browser is not as good as Safari on the iPhone. It passes 93/100 of Acid 3 tests while the iPhone browser passes 100/100/. The iPhone browser is also faster. great job Google, King of the Internet.
No multi-touch on Android. Yeah. Awesome.
The Android UI is not as good as the iPhone. See the laughable Zune HD interface.
Not very impressive given the amount of time and resources Google has thrown at this thing and the fact they had the iPhone to copy for quite some time now.
Sure thats what I would get if I couldn't have an iPhone but I wouldn't think it was the same thing or even close.
@medopal: Give me a freakin break. Even though the majority of Gizmodo writers and readers are Apple-centric at least they give other people's products a chance. This guy is just spouting his opinion like it's a fact, which isn't even remotely considered "journalism". This was just a ranting comment and in no way shape or form has any facts in it, just opinion. That's fine for writing in a comments section, but not for a real news story. I know PLENTY of people who love their Zunes and would flame the crap out of this guy for what he says about them, but it's not really worth it if you ask me because he would just write more crap here that would take up more space. #rachael
@istuptinosil: The UI of the Zune HD is great, I doubt you actually have used one. Seems to me like you are just taking a play out of every iPod fanboy play book.
I agree that Apple makes some great products, but ignoring innovation just because it isn't made by Apple seems sad. #rachael
Look, I love Android. I want it to do well. But Rachael? She's kinda flashy. Gaudy even. Like one of them ladies ready for a party at da' club on a Tuesday afternoon. Call me crazy, but I'm a one phone kinda guy. I don't need a handset that's out to impress every passing user with her twirly animations and shiny thumbnails. Give me a nice, down-to-earth OS. One comfortable enough in her functionality that she doesn't need to impress every user on the street.
Hate to break it to you, but interfaces get old. You won't always look that pretty. Just ask the 70s. #rachael

Personally, I think the Zune HD and iPhone's interface is better. This is nice, but there's a little too much going on if you ask me, especially the unnecessary swirling thumbnails and so forth.
@Kaiser-Machead: Amen. The tendency toward using album art more than text to display/find tracks has always bewildered me. That's especially true when taken to the small scale of that display. Pretty, but not practical. #rachael
it looks a little bit too cluttered to be compared to the zune hd interface, dont get me wrong its still nice looking but the zune hd interface just has less clutter and less fancy graphics, and just focuses on simplicity. #rachael
@death_cab_for_boobie: The Zune HD's interface is actually sort of cluttered. I love it, actually prefer it to the iPhone/iPod Touch, but I definitely wouldn't call it "simple." Like, instead of those swirly animations it has ones that look like a page turning.
I find that as long as the graphics are quick enough, I don't mind them, but obviously everyone's different. #rachael
@shartattack: Never have I ever seen a Sony Ericsson phone that wasn't GSM. So I'm going to assume this is going to be one of AT&T's first Android phones. #rachael
I love XMB - it organizes a ton of options into a quickly navigable 2D plane that's just tactile enough to quickly know where you are if you're zipping to a common place (like checking PSP battery level for instance.)
It came out on the PSX (PS2 based DVR unit) though, so did Yamanaka only do the PSP/PS3 version? (How about Sony Ericsson phones that also use it?)
I think the xmb works well. Its functional and easy to use, and that was probably the whole idea. I think the biggest short comming of the ps3 is the browser. It's slow, and abc.com wont let you watch shows on it, since it is not IE, or safari. At least it works with hulu, but I think the browser should be at the top of the list for the next update.

The browser is terrible, amazingly terrible. But from my perspective, I'd rather see it completely ignored so that development efforts could be assigned elsewhere in the PS system. I don't need or want a browser in my game console (and get irritated when, from whatever circumstance, it tries to launch itself at which point I immediately shut it back down). If I want to browse the internet, I'll sit down to either Safari or Firefox, and that's on my Mac.
