Apple will not give you the option, because, like with application support, it departs from Steve Jobs' golden vision.
You want Bluetooth keyboards on your iPhone? Jailbreak it and DIY. Maybe His Steveness will finally give in once everybody else has already decided to hack around his "vision", like he did with apps.
Its the same way I feel about an Apple Netbook. I have a Dell Mini9 Hackintosh.
If Apple would have had that form factor with FULL ON OSX back in May, i;d have bought two of them. Even at $800, I'd have bought two. As it were, I bought two Dell Mini9 with 2GB and 64GB SSD and the webcam and all the extra fixin's and paid right about $635 each including the two OSX retail DVDs.
Palm Pilot devices had separate keyboards despite the Graffiti and pop-up keyboards. It's silly not to allow this. In many cases a person could go on a business trip or to a meeting with just the phone and the keyboard, leaving the heavier notebook behind. I understand Apple may want to make its own keyboard instead of leaving this to third parties, but then MAKE A KEYBOARD already. I'd buy one.
I don't see the need for this with the phone... If you need a keyboard that big get a laptop... What next a larger screen to plug your iphone into when traveling?
@robotonist: This one is clearly designed for a desk. But users of other smartphones get access to a range of fold up/roll up Bluetooth keyboards that can fit in your pocket.
If there were no other reason to be skeptical, would they really both have 3G? I would expect that to be a defining separation between the two models, with the nano relegated to the badwidth depths of edge....
Straight up....This is stupid Apple....STUPID! WTF? You already make a phone, then you make an SDK....Programs MADE with the SDK have so far fit only one resolution b/w the iPhone and iPod Touch....NOW, you introduce a smaller iPhone? WTF? I can't wait to see how you reconcile the resolution differences b/w iPhone/iPod Touch and iPhone nano. Not to mention, who the fuck would want to fuck around with a screen that small? This is just stupid.
@TheSonOfKrypton: Apple has been working on Resolution Independence for OSX for some time now, but hasn't realized this in a release version. Perhaps this is intended to be that debut.
Seems kind of small but I will leave it up to Apple to convince me otherwise if it's true.
I think Apple has learned its lesson so I can't imagine it not having 3G.
I wish that Apple would create an iPod Touch with 3G data connection only. I could see tons of people buying a Touch with 3G paying $30 a month for unlimited internet.
Several people from Gizmodo laughed at the idea when I mentioned it to them. :)
What the deuce? An iphone with no 3g is like watching porn with no lube it just doesnt make sense. So now you have to run around with a small phone and expect to use the EDGE service which sucks donkey gonads plus attaching to whatever WIFI you find for free like crabs on a dirty va jay jay.. pfft.
This would still have a wider surface area than my SE W810, but likely a bit thinner and about the same height. That's not comically small. There are cell phones that are way Lilliputian.
@mares: Hrm... I find this interesting (which is significant coming from a certified mac hater), if they end up selling this like a iPod (unlocked from the factory w/out contract and a reasonable carrier-un-subsidized price) I could see this being quite an attractive value proposition. (A great item to buy your less than uber-tech-savvy girlfriend/parents/etc.)

I mean by the time i dig into a bag for this keyboard i might as well just grab my laptop and boot it up as then i'd have a real screen.
The smartphone is awesome because its a computer in my pocket. The moment it isn't fitting in my pocket it's just a terrible laptop.
