    Someone speculated that today is the 366th day of 2008. This seems like a good possibility as the source of the problem, although those of us counting seconds since 1-1-70 will by OK until at least Tue Jan 19 03:14:07 UTC 2038.


    It's funny to read people hating on iPods in this thread. If iPods died like this, we would never hear the end of it. Of course they haven't. These fuckups seems to be reserved for Microsoft *cough* Xbox 360 *cough*

    OK, let me see if I get this straight. Microsoft has a problem (I have not checked my zune yet) and it is a big picture with almost instant coverage. Apple hoses many thousand(s) of people over Christmas with a problem updating iPod Touches to 2.2 and how many times did we see this here? Hmmm, I am let down Gizmodo!


    Now, I need to get home tonight and see if my zune has wet tits up as well...

    it's not the company, it's the hardware. surely enough i hate all apple products (the main reason being apple tax) and i've owned several ipods before. all of which i hate. this is my first zune and i still love the fuck out of it EVEN THOUGH this happened. I'm sure microsoft will have a fix or perhaps a warranty service which i would actually rather not have because i now live outside the US

    Wow. Could be malicious code left in the Zune codebase by some disgruntled ex-employee. I'm surprised that kind of thing doesn't happen often, considering how easy it is.

    @stryder100: That is a very interesting hypothesis. It would only take one rogue programmer putting in a line of code that kills it at this particular time. That said, it would not explain why later models do not have the problem since, if Microsoft found the rogue code, one would think they would have issued an update to correct it on older models.


    I am suddenly very happy I did not pick up a cheap Zune 30 on Woot a few months back.
