<![CDATA[Zvue Spirit MP3 Player Brings New Meaning To Patriotism]]> Sure, the iPod has marketshare...and what may prove to be a timeless style. But you know what kicks the crap out of that stuff? Patriotism. And nothing says "America" like red, white and blue along with a star-shaped control panel—exactly what the Zvue Spirit is ready to offer.

The Spirit stores 1GB of tunes, including 15 preloaded patriotic tracks like Lee Greenwood's God Bless The USA. At just 2"x 1 3/8, it seems a little small for American Hummer-driving, Big-Gulp-drinking tastes. But who are we to ever question something that in some way almost resembles the American flag? Pre-order your Zvue Spirit today for $35.99. [Zvue via anythingbutipod]

<![CDATA[ZVUE 260 Plays Portable Video For The Thrifty]]> Despite bearing a slight resemblance to the iPod, the ZVUE 260 is more of a low-end player than the $249 Apple flagship. Priced at less than $100, the ZVUE 260 depends only on external SD memory cards, which means you're only getting a few gigs on this at most.

Despite the lack of storage, the ZVUE does play back video at 30fps on a QVGA display, plus supports WMA-DRM tracks. There's no real reason to purchase this player over, say, another relatively no-name MP3 player, but the combination of WRM-DRM and video playback at under $100 may be just right for some of you out there when it launches mid-2007.

<![CDATA[2 New ZVUE's at CES]]>

Ah, the ZVUE. Can you believe this is its "Third Generation?" I certainly can't. But HandHeld Entertainment will be showing two new portable media players at CES. The ZVUE 400 ($225) has a 3.5-inch LCD screen that supports videos at 30 fps, 512Mbytes of on-board flash memory, both Compact Flash and secure digital/multimedia card slots (SD/MMC), a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and is compatible with Windows Media Video (WMV) and Windows Media Audio (WMA) through the use of Microsoft's secure Digital Rights Management (DRM) software. The ZVUE 500 ($300) is pretty much the same as the 400, but comes with 1GByte of on-board Flash memory, has wireless(WiFi) 802.11a/b/g connectivity and a phone style button pad on the front of the device.

<![CDATA[ZVUE Still Selling Something, Making it Cheaper]]> ZVUE.jpgI remember ZVUE flogging this PMP a year ago and I'm surprised they're still alive and kicking. Oh well. More power to them. As a testament to their absolute popularity, they've slashed the price on their flagship ZVUE Portable MP3 and Media Player to $99 which means we're going to be able to get our hands on some nice LCDs and DSP chips for our future hacking projects for dirt cheap once they dump these at Odd Lots for $10 each in January 2006 or so. Once we figure out how to run Doom on that thing, we're golden.
