K, guys. I'm only here cause I'm a jerk and I need help. I wanna buy a laptop. Under 500 bucks. What should I look for spec wise to get the most power for my money? #whitenoise(Edit comment)
for 500$ you'll have to trade off either CPU or GPU performance.
If CPU performance is what you need; you should be looking for a computer with similar specs: [www.newegg.com]
If you want to play the occasional game, you're kinda screwed. Frankly speaking you'll be looking at a computer with at most an HD 6520G. You'll barely be able to play skyrim.
I guess with everything set as low (including a low resolution) you'll gain more FPS.
How many of you have derped around in Windows 8 yet? I really don't "get" it...Half the interface would work on tablets, half would work well on traditional computers, blending them together makes both crappy. I get all Windows versions for free through MSDN and I'm not even sure I'll be getting it yet. The thing that gets me is how much it makes you swap between the interfaces. Controls? They're right here. Oh, you need more? To Explorer! Internet Explorer? First thing you see. Need to watch a video? Lol oops to the desktop again! They need to straighten that out before release. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
So, I went in to Gamestop to finish paying off my copies of Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Modnation today, and the clerk tells me I can go ahead and pick them up. So I do.
Now I get to stare at these games for the next 3 days before I even get to play them. *facepalm* #whitenoise
Windows or OSX? On OS X, use the already installed Disk Utility. Just click on the Partition tab, then click on the plus sign and choose the size accordingly.
So goto my schools student center and wtf McDonalds and pizza hut are closed on sundays at freaking 1 pm..... that shits un-american. Not cool. I just wanted two McChickens and a Dr. Pepper. Life could of been fan-fricken-tastic, but nope. Please forgive my vent, I know its supposed to be reserved for tomorrow. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
There's a Mcdonalds in your student centre? I don't care what people say about it, that's fucking awesome. We just have healthy shit in our college food court. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
Mcdonalda, Pizza hut, Subway and TACO HELL/KFC COMBO!!!!!!!!! Next building over is star bucks, einstein bagel, jimmy johns and some salad place thats crappy. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
-The student-owned food cafeterias, which offer cheap, okay-tasting food (their poutine is great though). -The private-owned ones, where food tastes great but is almost twice the price. -The student-owned pub, more expensive and also not practical as it's always crammed full.
There is a Starbucks but they only offer coffee, no snacks. You can also walk 10 minutes and go to a combined Subway/Tim Hortons/Salvatore (the latter being pizza/salad/poutine). #whitenoise
I wish we had a taco bell nearby. We have like 4 tim hortons within walking distance of the university, counting the one on-campus, I'd gladly trade one of those for a TB. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
So I just bought a new computer. Or rather, parts for a new computer. First DIY computer build ever.I spent exactly $769.47 for it. (After rebates) The important specs are listed below CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 960T Graphics: AMD Radeon 6850 RAM: 8GB Monitor: Generic ViewSonic 1080p monitor (is it even possible to have a distinguishing monitor model number?) Case: Corsair 500R
Take your time, and make sure you actually connect the power source to the wall when trying to turn it on. After hours and hours of putting my first one together, I had a "Doh" moment, after tearing it all apart to find that the cord was never plugged into the wall, I felt pretty dumb.
Moral of the story. Always remember the power cord. #whitenoise
Its possible to build it in 45 minutes or so, but if its your first time definitely take your time. Installing the OS itself might be 45 minutes too, but the updates will probably take longer. Good luck! Looks like a good value for what you paid. Which MoBo? #whitenoise(Edit comment)
Good luck, like nitesh said, the updates will take a long time. Took me almost 2 hours worth of updates to finish installing. have fun! Its like being a kid again. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
So occasionally (3 times in last week) my HP desktop freezes. The first time, I clicked on an internet shortcut in the favorites bar, and the computer just froze for 5 minutes. The hard light drive stopped blinking and the clock didn't move and the keyboard and mouse just disappeared. When I restarted, I was unable to click on the same shortcut (It was there, but clicking on it did not take me to the page, but I recreated this shortcut and it works again).
Second time, TurboTax was opened and the same thing happened, except this time, a loud noise happened, like a machine breaking down. After restarting, a similar thing happened where I was unable to reopen what I had clicked on before the computer crashed so I had to reinstall TurboTax.
The third time the same loud, mechanical sound happened, but this time, the screen just went black and the computer was still on with its fan, but the monitor displayed the "NO SIGNAL" message.
All three times, the hard drive light stopped working and the computer just froze. I tried running all preliminary scans with N360 (Quick Scan, Full and Quick Reputation Scan) and no security problems. As of now, I am running a full N360 system scan and I just downloaded Malware Bytes and am running a full system scan.
Could it be a hard drive failure? This computer is pretty old, about 4 years. Can hard drives make such loud noises? It wasn't like a fan noise, but it sounded like an angry machine and lasted for a few seconds. #whitenoise
This typically is not a hard drive failure, if your computer is making loud noises, it may be that it is over heating and your fan is not working properly. (while this would be the best case scenario, it is highly unlikely)
Second, try removing hard drive from computer. Check the windows 7 task manager. How many CPU is your computer using and also how much Ram is it using when idle? This is a good indication whether or not it is a computer virus.
Thirdly, Try running some programs like TurboTax as Administrator, while this may work sometimes to solve the issue temporarily till it is found, you still need to seek out the problem and solve it.
The "angry machine" you are referring too could possibly be the CD/DVD drive, which if loose (the parts inside the drive) will cause a rather loud grinding noise when the computer boots or tries to use the CD/DVD drive while nothing is in it. Try putting in a DVD/CD into the drive, power down and boot up and see if this noise goes away or quiets any. Normally Hard drives do not much that loud of a noise.
last but not least, have you done any defrags to your hard drive lately? and How full is your hard drive?
Norton checks all running tasks and processes against a list of commonly used processes in the Norton community, and no process has even been flagged as suspicious. CPU usage is very low, ranging from 3-4% because of Explorer, antivirus software processes and task manager itself. And as for memory, 1.48 GB is being used, but that is mainly antivirus, windows explorer and the fact that I am running a full scan, already halfway through, and I do not want to restart it :P.
Having applications like TurboTax quit isn't the main issue, but I just brought it up as a strange example where if I open a shortcut then the computer freezes and I restart the computer, I can no longer use that shortcut, be it TurboTax or a bookmark in the web browser.
I put in a CD and it did make a very loud noise trying to read it, but does that explain why the computer just decides to crash randomly?
No the CD loud noise isn't the reason of the sudden crashes. I merely said that to distinguish if that was the case or not. The loud noise means your CD/DVD drive wheel is loose. Not a big deal just annoying to listen too.
As for your computer crashing it doesn't show any signs of a virus. Do you get any error reports or messages that come up? Also Make sure your drivers and your bios are all up to date. Also when trying to use anything that requires adobe flashplayer, or shockwave player. It has been known to cause computer freezing and programs shutting down. Another thing to watch is when a program freezes look through the task manager and see where all the CPU usage is going to, what program? and also check to see if the program becomes unresponsive or if it says it is still running. One last thing you can do is to revert back to a previous version of Windows 7. This meaning you go roll back drivers and system updates, and see if this solves the problem. A lot of the times when updating windows or drivers, they do not install correctly. See if this works if you need step by step on how to roll back drivers or to a previous session of windows let me know. Good luck, hope this solves your problem. #whitenoise
No error reports. I tried to look for a solution using Control Panel, and the first time it happened it said that I needed to update iTunes. That should have fixed the problem, but I just ended up uninstalling all Apple software (Bonjour, iTunes, etc.) but it still happened. The next two times, I was unable to submit an error report to Microsoft. I scanned with MSE, Norton and MalwareBytes (I installed MSE and MalwareBytes for the purpose of scanning, I don't normally run 2 antivirus programs). The fact that I was able to ownload and install MSE and MalwareBytes is surely a good sign that no malware is on my computer, otherwise #whitenoise(Edit comment)
Well thats a good sign then no viruses. Sad to say I do believe your hard drive is corrupted then. Meaning there are probably registry errors somewhere as well as files missing or in wrong places on the hard drive, and/or files on the computer. Now there is a way to go about this and fix it, however it is rather time consuming.
What you can do is if you have the install disks, you can place the install disks in the computer, basically what you are going to do is reinstall the OS on the computer. What this does is recreates the image and resets all the registry and OS files on the computer. This will take care of your computer freezing issue.
1. Insert OS install disk into computer, when computer is running. 2. Click run win7install.exe when it appears 3. go through the setup and install process. *** ATTENTION **** when doing this be sure to do custom install, and make sure that the old files on the computer are put into a folder called "windows.old" this file will have all programs, documents, movies, pictures anything you had on it before the fresh install. that way you keep all your documents and can move them from the "windows.old" file to the new folders created. Just drag and drop. 4. after clicking custom install run through the set up and then it will reboot your computer. 5. Complete set up, run any updates and install any antivirus programs. 6. Then from here you can rearrange your desktop and install any programs that you need or use.
Unfortunately I have not found any other way to fix these errors. It has symptoms of a computer virus, however there is no computer virus detected. The freezing when clicking on shortcuts usually means there is a registry error, meaning it cannot find the complete file path of the program. So this is the easiest but longest fix there is to get your computer running back to normal.
Let me know if you have any further questions, or if new symptoms occur. Hope this helps. #whitenoise
I hear ya, Giz has been acting up, I was also commenting on this same thread. Other threads I'd have to edit them three or four times because it wouldn't post everything. And I still can't post pictures on any comments to the stories. #broken#whitenoise(Edit comment)
Thanks! I have an audio jack to RCA cable already, if I get the VGA-DVI-I cable and a wireless keyboard and mouse that should make for a nice HTPC :)
Yeah, that happens to me all the time with the comments. You'd think a full year plus after the redesign they'd have stuff fixed by now, but the bug list only grows. #whitenoise
Try clearing your cache and deleting your cookies, restart your browser and then try to comment again-- did this do the trick? Let me know and sorry about this.
Like I mentioned to Lewis: Try clearing your cache and deleting your cookies, restart your browser and then try again-- did this do the trick? Let me know and sorry for the inconvenience this is causing.
No problem, Enjoy the HTPC, it makes for watching sports and switching to PC gaming much smoother. AKA not having to get off the couch to go play PC games. Or watch movies. lol! #whitenoise(Edit comment)
No this didn't work, and I am unable to edit comments correctly either. Some comments will let me edit and others won't. I cannot add images or video to posts, and for some reason I have a grey box around my name sometimes. I have tried three different computers also. #broken(Edit comment)
What browser are you running on your main? What Os? Did this just start? Try running the site in incognito mode/private mode-- is the problem still occurring? Let me know and again, sorry about this.
Fyi-- I went ahead and wrote a complaint to the tech team about this-- I'll update you if I hear anything/ update me if the problem seems to stop. Again, sorry about this.
Just testing if it works. We'll be fixed pretty soon.
There is another post I made that didn't show up anywhere. I had posted it on Whitenoise but it ended up being available only on my profile. #whitenoise
I am running Win7, This just started about 3 days ago. It is hit or miss. I have run it on Chrome 17.0, Firefox newest version, and IE9, nothing works properly. I just tried running it incongnito mode, and there is supposed to be a pic attached to this of icognito sign. But as you can't see it is not working lol. Thanks for the help Steve #whitenoise(Edit comment)
I find this post about asking the community who to ban very disturbing. I almost don't want to comment on the post as I'm afraid that if I do, I'll be summarily executed just on whim. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
I agree with the comment saying it would be more productive to ask for the worst writer. But I'm afraid to agree with it in the article for the same reason as you. Damn it, this is like iNorth Korea. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
Can you use a VGA to DVI cable to connect a computer to a HDTV with no fancy converters? I think the TV takes both analog and digital DVI, but I'll check that. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
Mine does have a DVI input. I'm not sure though, some places online are saying DVI is encrypted and VGA isn't, but since I'm starting from the unencrypted source it should work, right? #whitenoise(Edit comment)
If you're talking about HDCP, then DVI does not necessarily support it. It's optional, unlike in the HDMI spec. VGA simply does not support encryption. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
Nope. Its a few years old but still works fine apart from the screen, which has gone all red unless you do a dance and hold it at certain angles. Its a Core Duo so it can push 1080p quite easily, so its a nice free HTPC. #whitenoise(Edit comment)
Well your TV doesn't have a DVI, so I mean it usually has VGA depending on how old the HDTV is. You could purchase a VGA to HDMI converter, or a VGA to HDMI cable. If you get the cable, then you'd need an audio cable with a headphone jack for the computer and it splits to the regular audio cables. (red and white)
Correction, I totally misread your above comment man. Sorry, lewis the eight-second, posted your reply that will work for the VGA to DVI cable. Like he said get the DVI-I.
Couldn't edit the above comment cause Giz is acting up for some reason. #whitenoise

From videos I've seen, always put the parts together on a test bunch, or otherwise, a good sized box that came with one of the parts.

Only if your TV supports analog DVI, as you said. If it does, I don't see a reason why it shouldn't work.
You want a DVI-I type port, since it supports both digital and analog. DVI-D is digital only and DVI-A is analog only.
