The toms hardware review isn't as hard to get through as it's 40 pages looks, it's large size is due to the number of screenshots they included to help find settings for the issues they're discussing. That being said, I gotta say the original article is worthless, the toms hardware guide quickly tells you how to change or disable a lot of the items that are identified as complaints in the "bullet points" article. Most specifically the way the UAC prompts display themselves. A lot of the most stringent "ms took away my control" complaints are quickly rectified with easy to find settings. I've been using the beta for a week now and it's actually a lot easier to work with after reading the toms hardware article. Basically vista is doing what a lot of people applaud linux and unix for doing. Taking away root level administrative access from the user is a good thing. Even for an administrator of a system it is preferable to work with a non-root account whenever possible to avoid the possibility of screwing something up inadvertently. I think most people need to give vista a chance and actually sit down and use it before complaining. Too often we just react to whether it's apple or microsoft and make assumptions before we even have access to the application.
Not An Apple Fan Boy!

Yeah Trae - you'll just have a second-rate operating system that is worse than Apple's system that came out a year and a half prior. By that time, Apple would have embarrassed Vista to shame with Leopard, and Vista will simply be the next Windoze XP - a crappy system that is cumbersome with viruses, spyware, worms, and other malware. And you'll probably have to get a new computer to run the friggin' large thing! Maybe that will be good for Apple - they'll sell more Macs when people see that they will have to shell out for a new computer anyway if they want to run Shista.
kevmbpro

*insert unfounded fanboy comment*

Actually, on a better note, check out Tom's Hardware's much more extensive in depth look at Vista.

http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/31/windows_vista/

Vista may cost a chunk of change when it comes out but at least I won't have to pay for a new breed of cat each year. <-- Decided to insert fanboy comment there. ;)
Trae

First, let me just say that article was LONG! And all the damn pop-ups and enlarge-image links didn't help any either!

Now, with that said ... I think it is way to early for anybody to say Vista is going to suck. Who knows what it will be like until the final release? I will tell you, if Vista (as the author describes) makes me authenticate every little thing I do with some sort of a pop-up message, I'm going to flip out! That, and having to do desktop support for some users running Aero and some users not running Aero could be a bit of a nightmare in itself.

On a semi-related note, does anybody else find it totally whacked that Microsoft will start selling virus protection for Windows for $50 a year? It's almost like paying the Mafia for "protection".
Terp4Life

unfortunately for apple fanboys, microsoft is far too ubiquitous (at the moment ;) )to just die, even if vista absolutely died in the ass. They have mobile platforms, embedded ones, tablet stuff and media centric junk that apple just doesn't do... (why not either? i'd love an apple tablet or UMPC or whatever) But my point is that no one outside the geek community cares about vista. They just want something that is there, and its usually something MS.

Apple needs to make up its mind where its money is. Software or hardware, whats the point trying to sell both? Make OSX open source and i reckon Dell, HP, Sony would all start offering it. Apple could kick MS around a lot more than it does now if it did something like that. Then just sell hardware. Like ipods.
illucid

I am not a big Microsoft fan but I believe the estimates were that 60% of the code was going to be rewritten in Vista. I'm not sure the exact mark that they hit but they have replaced a lot of legacy code so that they could move to a "new" security model which is much more Unix like. Users run as non-root(Administrator) now by default.

The only other thing that I found humorous about this post is that Mac OS X wasn't written in a vacuum it's based largely from my understanding on NeXt OS which was based on BSD. So there is "legacy" code in it as well.

Just my 2 cents worth. I personally bash both Microsoft and Apple, give me a good old Amiga any day.
Nyle

Most who bashed Windows XP before it was released then changed their mind after seeing the finished product are fools. The only thing that XP offered was better stability, and that took almost a year after the release.

I've used windows since 3.1. I have used EVERY permutation of windows since, including those bastard children Windows ME (OH GOD NOOO) and windows 98 lite. Although, the 98 lite mod was actually beneficial but it wasn't dev'd by M$. I've been supporting windows on the admin side for over 1500 clients since windows 95. XP is no better than what 95 was, just prettier with slightly more complex and sophisticated code environments. However, these came late to the game as well.

I predict that Vista will suck. I also predict I will not change my mind. Call me obstinate but M$ won't ever earn my business back. Not after the hell they've put me through.
gannas

Kev, thank god for your eloquent words, summing up exactly why it's better. "nuff said" is so descriptive and eloquent.

The virus argument has always pissed me off to high heaven. That's like saying "gee those rich people are stupid for driving cars, because cars are prone to theft, if they didn't own cars, their cars wouldn't get stolen" Ok so there's very few viruses written for macs, it's not because it's not possible. It's because it's a limited target. I *WISH* apple would take market share, if only to settle these security arguments that always come up.
Not An Apple Fan Boy!

I'm using beta 2 vista and office 2007 right now. And my first reaction is definately "Macesque" it feels like a mac, the system tries to keep you in one single window at all times. I don't care one way or another about the aero interface but the ability to "scroll" through open windows to see them all at once is definately lovely.

On office 2007: You know, when I sat down and first started playing i HATED it, i mean god, huge ass buttons and my old "file edit view" menus are gone. Replaced by "tabs" of buttons. But once you start using it, the changes are actually useful, I work in helpdesk support and this should be much easier to explain to a user over the phone how to find things than office xp was.
Not An Apple Fan Boy!

Nicer interface? Honestly, it looks like it was designed by an 8th grader obsessed with goth. It seems oddly like one of the more horrific themes for Linux gui's like Enlightenment or KDE rather than the product of a billion dollar corporation.

Granted, There are some nice features in the new operating system, but it really feels like a pretty blatent catch-up to Mac OS X. As always, Microsoft seems so focused on capturing the features from Tiger that they completely forget about the (ostensibly more important) elegant implementation of those features.

In a sense, Mac OS X always feels like its in the background for when you need it, while Vista constantly struggles for your attention.

Office 2007 rocks, however and has the kind of innovation that is sorely lacking from Vista.
Aubin
