While those images are strange and off putting, I've heard of something like this before. I'm not going to name any names, but a friend, back when he was a young, geeky freshman, would drape a towel over his PC monitor and his head in order to better immerse himself in his games and to block out the environment around him. It's the same reason we turn the lights out in a movie theatre and surround the screen with black drapes. If the media you are experiencing, be it film, tv, or something interactive like a game, is the only thing in your field of vision, it's easier to forget that your're sitting in a chair surrounded by strangers and can allow you a more complete experience. Think of it as a portable movie theatre. A portable movie theatre for techno-scuba divers, adrift in a sea of loneliness.

The pictures cracked me up, reminded me of some sort of performance art sillines. High tech isn't the right use for it - instead think large format view cameras where you're covering your head anyhow. This seals up the edges just right. Just add a way to quickly pop your head up to check the scene again and it's perfect.

hahaha, those pictures struck me as extremely funny. Lets be honest though, if you were to take these to a LAN party (the one in the far right picture for example) you would be the pimp of the party...and it definately wouldn't strike them as too weird.
